Laughs, Leisure & Island Sunshine – Key West, July 5–11, 2025

Besides April, another time my husband and I usually visit Key West is right around the 4th of July. Even the past several years I even was able to participate in the 4th of July 5K. I really wanted to keep my streak going, but with the way the 4th fell this year on the calendar, it made it difficult to do so. We tend to fly out on a Saturday and return on a Saturday. Due to the fact the holiday was on a Friday, we had to make the decision as to whether take the week prior to the 4th or after. After going back and forth, we decided to head back on the 5th of July. This way we would most likely avoid all the crowds, etc., but unfortunately no 5K for me this time.

July is usually hit or miss when it comes to the weather. Several years ago, we were in Key West when Tropical Storm Elsa hit. Last year we experienced several days of on and off rain showers. I looked at the weather forecast prior to our arrival and this time the weather was looking perfect.

This would now make it our 36th time to Key West since we first set foot back in March 2006. As usual, we were staying at our home away from home, The Gardens Hotel. Our friends Brent and Julie, along with Al and Lynn were also going to be in Key West the same time as us like we did back in April.


Saturday, July 5th – Arrival Day, The Gardens Hotel, Alonzo’s

It had been a while since we have been home for the 4th, but it was a picture perfect day and it gave me a chance to make sure everything was in order before we were leaving the following day. Our flight time to Key West was a little bit later then usual, 10:05am to be exact. So we didn’t need to get up super early this time. I had our car service arranged to have us picked up at 6:50am. I didn’t know what to expect as far as the traffic to Newark airport due to the fact it was the day right after a holiday. Well I think we could have been picked up at 7:30am instead and still would have had plenty of time to get to the airport.

Route 80 is never without any traffic, but the amount of vehicles on the highway were minimal. We arrived at the airport just under an hour give or take a few minutes. When our driver dropped us off, I couldn’t believe how it wasn’t packed with people like it normally is. Our flight was out of Terminal A which encompasses several airlines, not just United. We walked up to the Clear kiosks to get scanned. There was only one person ahead of us so we got through within a couple of minutes. Even when we went through the TSA security, there weren’t many people ahead of us. I think the entire process took us around 5 or 6 minutes. I thought that maybe we should travel the day after a holiday more often.

We had about an hour and a half until we were scheduled to board our flight, so we headed to the United Club Lounge. I always feel like our vacation starts when we sit down in the lounge and have a “I am on vacation” breakfast cocktail. Time seemed to move quickly while we were at the lounge and soon it was time to walk to our gate. I thought our gate was further down, but when we exited the lounge it was only several steps to our gate. 

When I saw the Key West digital sign, it gave me a sense of excitement still after all the times we have been to Key West. And just 3 months prior mind you.

It wasn’t before long that we heard them announce they were going to start the preboard process. We were in Group 1 so we got in line and waited. Usually we have to wait for people with Global Premiere, or families with small children, etc. to board first, but no one went ahead of us. So when we got the green light to board, we were the first ones on the plane. It was kind of odd to see all the empty seats on the plane.

We settled into our seats quickly and waited for everyone to board. Once the door was closed, the captain came onto the intercom and we were all set for take off. Within about 20 minutes or so, we were soon up in the sky on our way to Key West. 

Surprisingly, the flight crew was very nice and super friendly throughout our flight. So much so, that at one point one of the flight attendants grabbed a bottle of champagne to serve a passenger who was celebrating her 40th birthday. Even the captain came on to the intercom to wish her a happy birthday. How fun is that I thought to myself?

The familiar sights of the different blue and green hues of the water began to come into view. I knew we were nearing Key West once I saw the chain of islands below. We wound up coming into Key West a different way so I wasn’t able to get a good picture of the island. Sometimes the planes fly perpendicular to Key West and then comes back around to the island. This time we flew over the Keys and landed directly into Key West.

The landing as usual, came to a quick and forceful stop. The captain even warned us about it since it is a 737 aircraft and has to come to a stop on a short runway. Once we were parked at the gate, we grabbed our carry-on luggage and exited the plane. It still felt odd exiting the plane and not walking down the tarmac. However, it was welcoming to exit into a fully air-conditioned airport vs. walking outside in the heat (especially in July) into the airport.

Quickly we managed to get through the airport and back outside to grab a taxi. I sent a text to Lynn to let her know we were on our way to the Gardens. Ironically their flight was scheduled to arrive before ours, which it did, however they were stuck on the tarmac. I believe they were having issues with opening the door to the Gate.

I was also checking my phone regarding our shipped box containing all of our toiletries. When I shipped the box, it was supposed to arrive after 3 days, however it got delayed in Teterboro, NJ for the same amount of time. I was getting antsy with the July 4th holiday that it would not get to the Gardens until after we arrived. Luckily when I checked again after we landed, I saw that the box was delivered just about an hour before we landed. What timing I thought to myself.

As always, seeing the water along the way to our hotel, brings a sense of happiness to me. Not before long, the infamous yellow brick wall along Simonton St. came into view. Our taxi driver actually went through the Fire Station parking lot so that he could pull up along the Gardens making our exit easier. 


We grabbed our luggage and walked up the stairs into the building to check ourselves in. Rhoda was back behind the desk and welcomed us on our return visit. Our room was ready and we were handed our keys.

Our Happy Place in Key West

My husband and I once again had a truly wonderful stay at The Gardens Hotel—our 36th visit! The lush, tropical grounds and warm, welcoming staff always make us feel right at home. We took our things back out through the building out onto the patio area. As soon as I saw the beautiful grounds and the pool I was so happy to be back. Phil was behind the bar and gave us each a welcome back hug. We were going to do bring our bags up to our room to unpack, but that would have to wait. Phil presented us with two cold Heinekens. The first sip always tastes the best. We sat down at the bar and soon Brent and Julie walked in. It was great to seem them again even though it wasn’t that long ago we were sharing good times together in Nashville just a couple months prior.

Within a few minutes, our other friends Lynn and Al arrived. Lynn had in tow her usual pile of gifts for everyone from her store in Long Island – including bags of her sweet and salty popcorn concoction. 


After we caught up with everyone, we quickly went to our room to unpack our things. We noticed that there was a lovely display of goodies welcoming us back. It was from the bartender Phil. It was so nice of him to that we both thought.

Once everything was put away in their appropriate drawers and the toiletries were stowed away in the bathroom, we headed back to the bar. It was a nice afternoon enjoying everyone’s company once again and sharing stories.

Julie had made reservations for all of us that night at Alonzo’s. I wanted to go back to Alonzo’s since last year when we went, Brent wasn’t feeling so well. I told Julie that this was going to be our redemption dinner.

It was nearing our reservation time, so we quickly freshened up before meeting everyone back down by the Gardens bar. We did experience a little pop up shower, but by the time we got to Alonzo’s, thanks to an Uber ride, the skies cleared up and it was a beautiful evening.

We walked through the old area that used to be occupied by the White Tarpon, follow by Walhburgers. Now it is an extension of Alonzo’s. It has a huge full service bar complete with tv’s to catch a sports game and lighter fare dining options.

Since we had a few minutes to spare, we each grabbed a cocktail (glass of white wine for me) before walking into the main restaurant. 

When we walked in I noticed it wasn’t crowded at all. I guess since it was after the holiday and also July, there weren’t too many people. Usually when you walk into a place like Alonzo’s, it is packed with people standing around waiting for a table to become available.


Soon the hostess grabbed our menus and seated us at a lovely table outside. It was on the corner so it gave us the perfect amount of room to sit around. As we were all looking over the menu, the first thing that struck my eye was the grouper reuben. Years ago when I used to eat red meat regularly, a reuben sandwich was one of my favorites. I had never seen a reuben made with fish and thought that I had to give a try. To start, my husband and I agreed to share the fried calamari. You can’t have to much fried food can you? He also went with a sandwich, but the fried snapper sandwich.


When our server came back to the table, everyone placed their orders. It was a fun evening enjoying everyone’s company, like we just saw everyone a few days ago, not months. Our appetizers arrived and I was pretty hungry since I hadn’t eaten since our flight that was hours ago. The fried calamari was served hot and crispy. It wasn’t over cooked which sometimes can happen with calamari.


It wasn’t before long that our main courses were served. I could not wait to dig into my sandwich. The grouper was fresh and delicious. The combination of the coleslaw, swiss cheese and thousand island dressing was perfect. Everyone else enjoyed their meals. I don’t think anyone had room for dessert, so once we were finished with our meals we asked for the check.

Fresh seafood with many options

Whether you are in the mood for oysters on the half, a burger, or fish tacos, Alonzo’s has something for everyone. The food isn’t fancy or high-end, it is just good food that won’t break the bank. You can choose to sit in the well air-conditioned dining room and/or sit at a table outside that overlooks the marina. 

We usually opt to sit outside so you can also get a chance to see the sunset in the sky. It is also a fun way to watch all the visitors walk by while you wait for your dinner. Their fried calamari is delicious and they do not skimp out on the portion. It is perfect to share with your other half.

If you don’t want anything too fancy, I highly recommend one of their fish sandwiches. I was very impressed with the grouper reuben. No matter what you order, I think you will be fully satisfied dining at Alonzo’s.

I wanted to walk back to the Gardens instead of taking an Uber since I was so full.

Everyone else agreed and we made the walk back down Simonton to the Gardens. It was a nice way to end our first day back in my happy place.


Sunday, July 6th – Azur, The Sunset Tiki Bar at the Galleon, Bali Bar, Latitudes

I saw a few days earlier that the weather was going to be quite hot while we were in Key West which is to be expected in the summer months. Usually we opt to have our first breakfast at La Te Da our first morning in Key West, but I thought it may be a bit too hot to sit at our usual tables outside. So I went ahead and booked us a table at Azur for 10:00am. This way we could sleep in a little after our travel day and have a cup of coffee from our favorite coffee place, Cuban Coffee Queen. 


We woke up to a warm and sunny morning. After we freshened up, we headed out to Cuban Coffee Queen, but not before saying hello to Lynn and Al who were enjoying the Gardens breakfast. After we talked about what our plans for the day, we made it across Angela St. through the Key West Fire Department parking lot. When we walked up to the counter at Cuban Coffee Queen, there was no one ahead of us. I guess it really was slow season. We are so accustomed to wait on line before placing our order. Our cuban americans were ready in no time and then we were off to Azur. 

Meanwhile Brent and Julie were renting a beautiful house on Eaton St. Since it was on the way to Azur, we planned to meet them at their house and walk on over to Azur. However, after we got our coffee, we realized we were too early for our reservation. 

So we made a Plan B. We decided to walk down Duval and then back up towards Eaton. This way we could get a few steps in before indulging in our breakfast/brunch. 

We managed to get some steps accomplished before walking down to Eaton. Brent and Julie were all ready. I didn’t realize how close Azur was. It was literally just another block from where they were staying. When we walked in, at first I wanted to sit outside, but the air conditioning felt too good to pass up. So when the hostess asked us where we would like to sit, without hesitation we all said inside.

We were the first ones to arrive so we had the entire dining area to ourselves. To start, my husband and I ordered a couple of screwdrivers, while Julie opted for a mimosa and Brent went with a cappuccino. We weren’t in any rush that day and since we had a late reservation at Latitudes that evening it was better to have a later breakfast. 

I was looking over the menu and decided to go with the Roesti, which was described as a potato pancake, brie, proscuitto, arugula and hollandaise. It sounded intriguing to me so I ordered it when our server came back over after serving us our drinks. My husband and Brent decided to go with the gnocchi frittata, while Julie choose the granola with fresh berries and yogurt. 

While we were waiting for our breakfast to arrive, another couple of people were seated near us. The previous times we have been to Azur, usually it is a lot more crowded. I didn’t really need to make the reservation. 

Anyway, it took a bit of time, but eventually breakfast arrived. I was pleasantly surprised that my meal also had a pair of poached eggs. I didn’t realize it when I saw it on the menu. It was more or less like eggs benedict. When I took the first bite, it was just as good as it looked.

A Quiet Escape to Enjoy the First Meal of the Day

Azur is located a bit off the main drag of Duval, but if you are lucky enough to stumble upon it, you won’t be disappointed. You have the option to dine inside or outside in the covered back portion of the building. It is completely shaded, so if you are worried about sitting in the sun, don’t. If it is a hot day, like we just experienced, you may want to sit inside at one of their very comfortable tables with cushioned seating.

There is a bar – so feel free to order your favorite breakfast cocktail to start while you look over the menu. The menu is filled with not just your usual breakfast fare. Since it is considered brunch, you can even order a burger if you’d like, which may be a bit difficult to get down at 9am in the morning. 

The service tends to be on the slower side, so if you aren’t in any rush this place is for you. They are know for their smoked salmon eggs benedict which I have ordered before and it is delicious. If you want to be less adventerous, they offer a lovely granola with fresh fruit and greek yogurt. It is served separately, so you can put together the ingredients as you so choose.

I also recommend their frittatas. My particular favorite is the four cheese and egg white option. (Why bother with egg whites if you have four cheeses, but I digress) It comes complete with arugula, avocado and pesto. And most recently I enjoyed the roesti – which was basically eggs benedict, but instead of your typical english muffins, they were served on a delicious crispy large potato pancake.

All and all you can’t go wrong with whatever you choose to start your day. Azur is a quiet escape to start your day in Key West.

After our breakfast we walked out onto Grinnell St. and you could feel the heat from the sun. I didn’t realize how hot it was outside, being in the nice air conditioning. I wanted to head to the Sunset Tiki Bar at the Galleon to see Ramsey, whom I remember works on Sundays.

We all decided that the Sunset Tiki Bar would be our next stop. So we walked around and headed to the Bight, walking along behind the Schooner Wharf, passing by Shrimp Boat Records Recording studio, etc. I still can’t believe the amount of stickers it now holds.

It was nice to see her again. We settled into a couple of seats in the corner, making it easier for us all to talk. 

The weather was hot, but the sun was shining and the skies were blue, making the water a beautiful back drop. 

The owner Phil made an appearance, but he was sporting a sling. He welcomed us back before explaining to us how he hurt himself. Him and his wife just got back from vacation and while he was trying to put the luggage away, he tripped over a set of stairs in the garage. Like they say accidents happen at home. Luckily he is on the mend and it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. We chatted for a while before making our way back out into the Key West world.

Brent and Julie headed back to their house to relax for the afternoon. I was still in that mode where I wanted to go to another place. As my husband and I walked down towards Duval, we thought about where to go next. 

Then it both dawned on us, the Bali Bar. We hadn’t been there yet and it is that perfect little place to have a drink and out of the hustle and bustle of Duval – even though it wasn’t that crowded. https://www.thekeywesthotel.com/bali-bar-key-west

We walked down Duval and made a turn down the alley to the Bali Bar. 

There were a couple of people sitting at the bar, but we were able to find a couple seats on the other end. I ordered the mango mojito while my husband ordered a beer. We had planned on only staying for one and making our way back to the Gardens. 

While we were enjoying our drinks, we started to talk to the bartender. It turned out he also is a singer/songwriter. He plays occasionally around including the Bali Bar, which he was scheduled to play that evening. However, we had dinner reservations at the Latitudes that evening so we weren’t sure if we would be able to make it. His name was Jay Waple and he was very nice. 

We wound up staying for another round, just as a female musician was setting up to perform for the afternoon. I felt bad leaving when no one else was there and she just arrived. We then asked Jay to turn on the Nascar race so that we could catch a few minutes of the race. It turned out he was also a fan of racing. So instead of staying for one we stayed for about an hour or so. Eventually we pulled ourselves away and thanked Jay for the hospitality and told him we would try and stop by again that night after dinner.

We did make it back to the Gardens and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon relaxing by the pool. The pool felt so refreshing when I jumped in. It was just what we needed after the hot walk down Duval St.

Once again Phil was behind the bar and kept us entertained. 

While we were enjoying the pool, Lynn and Al showed up. They talked about how they spent the day at Fort Zachary. One of these days I thought to myself we should go. We only went to Fort Zachary once and walked the entire way there. It was a long walk, especially when it is so hot out.

After a nice afternoon enjoying the pool, it was time for us to get ready for dinner. Since the sun sets later on during the summer months, Julie made the reservations for 7:45pm. We planned to meet at the Gardens and take an Uber over to the Opal Resort to catch the water taxi. Once we freshened up, there was still time to enjoy a glass of wine at the Gardens Bar. Brent and Julie arrived shortly after. They sat down and joined us for a pre dinner cocktail.

When everyone was ready, Julie hit the Uber app and we were on our way to the Opal resort. I prefer walking, then taking an Uber, but it was so hot out that I would be a sweaty mess by the time we got to the dock.  It was a quick ride over and the driver dropped us right in front of the resort. 

There wasn’t a cruise ship in town at the time, so there weren’t too many people walking around. It was nice to be able to see the view of the water and the sky without having an enormous ship blocking it. 

Soon in the water I could see the water taxi making its way on over to the pier. We all got on line and waited to get the nod to board the boat.

Once everyone was on board, we took the short ride on over to Sunset Key. The sun was starting to get lower in the sky and it looked so beautiful. I was hoping that maybe this was the night we could see the sun set in to the water and maybe catch a green flash of some sort.

We exited the boat and walked up to the restaurant. 


Since we were a little bit later in the evening then when we normally have dinner at Latitudes, I noticed there were people enjoying a cocktail or two at the bar outside of the restaurant. Usually when we walk on by, there is no one there. Maybe we could have a drink there after a dinner I thought to myself. I always wanted to.

The hostess walked us through the restaurant back outside to a table perfectly situated in the middle of the dining area. 

Our server came over and we all ordered something to drink. I ordered a glass of their sauvignon blanc, knowing I would be ordering the crispy salmon. We have been fortunate enough to dine at Latitudes for quite some time and I always appreciate that, but they have had the same menu for years. And they never have any specials, which is fine, but at least maybe change one or two items on the menu once in a while. 

To start I choose to go with the caesar salad and so did my husband. He ordered the shrimp carbonara, which I have sampled in a previous visit, and it is very good. Brent and Julie also went ahead and ordered the crispy salmon like me.


While we were waiting for our first course to arrive, we all watched the sun as it began to set, making the sky filled with an array of colors. The weather was absolutely perfect. I kept thinking how back in January how cold it was when we were there and had to ask our server for one of those heater lamps just to stay somewhat warm and comfortable.


As the sun quickly fell lower in the sky, I noticed there was a few clouds between the sun and the water. No green flash I thought. Nevertheless, it was still a beautiful sunset to witness.


It took a while, but eventually our first courses came out, followed by our main meals. Everyone enjoyed their meals as always. I of course, had to take a sample of my husband’s shrimp carbonara and yes it was just as tasty as the last time I tried it. The crispy salmon is always a solid choice and plus salmon is one of my favorite fish to eat, besides hogfish. 


While we were finishing up, we noticed that the skies got really dark. I know the evening was setting in, but these were storm clouds. 


Within minutes, the rain started coming down. It came out of nowhere. Thank goodness we had already finished our dinner. Everyone started to run inside of the restaurant. The waitstaff started grabbing the chair cushions to prevent them from becoming saturated. Even my husband helped by grabbing our cushions and brought them inside. 


Due to the fact the rain was coming down in buckets, there was no water taxi on its way. We had to wait it out and the perfect way to do that was to have an after dinner drink at the outside bar. Everyone else had the same idea, but we found several empty seats. My husband went up to the bar to order a couple of after dinner cocktails for everyone. It was probably about a half of an hour so before the rain started to subside. 

Then we noticed the water taxi had arrived. I grabbed my purse and we walked down the pier to the water taxi and so did everyone else that was waiting out the weather. 

We had to wait for the arriving guests to exit. I couldn’t believe so many people had reservations for dinner so late in the evening. I think it was around 9:30 or even close to 10:00pm. We walked on to the boat once we got the okay. It wasn’t like the ride over that’s for sure. They were packing everyone in. We wound up getting a couple of seats inside of the boat since the outside area was already occupied.

Go for the Experience

Yes it may be a bit on the pricey side, but the entire experience, from taking the water taxi off the pier of the Opal Resort, to Sunset Key and if you are lucky enough to catch the sunset, it is worth it. The moment you step foot onto Sunset Key, it feels like you are miles and miles away from the touristy spots on Duval.

The menu has been the same for quite some time and they do not offer any specials, but Latitude’s menu has something for everyone. The food is prepared well and is delicious. Is it the best meal you’ll have on Key West? Probably not, but to have the view while you dine, makes up for the food.

When there wasn’t any room left, we headed back to the Opal Resort. I still can’t believe in away, we were stuck at Latitudes. I guess there are worse places to be stranded at. We arrived at the dock and headed out to Front St. While we were walking, the rain returned. Brent and Julie were going back to their house rental so they grabbed an Uber. We wanted to try and catch Jay at the Bali Bar before he was done with his set for the evening, but the rain wasn’t letting up.


Somehow we made it to Duval without getting drenched. The rain calmed down once again while we walked down to the Bali Bar. We walked in and found a couple of seats at the bar. Unfortunately we only heard one song before his set was over. All well we tried. We would have had more time we weren’t stuck in the rain. Jay thanked us for stopping by and with that we headed back to the Gardens to turn in for the evening.


Monday, July 7th – Bagatelle, Lazy Pool Day, Lynn’s Birthday at Blue Heaven

It was another beautiful and warm morning. The rain had moved through from the night before and the sun was shining. While we were getting ready for the day, we contemplated where to meet Brent and Julie for breakfast. The place of choice we agreed upon was Bagatelle. I texted Julie and arranged for us to meet there around 9:30am for breakfast. 

After taking showers we walked down to the patio area where we ran into Lynn and Al finishing up their breakfast. It was Lynn’s birthday and we wished her a happy birthday and chatted for a few minutes before making our way out to grab our coffee at Cuban Coffee Queen. 


Again, there was no line and we had our coffee in hand within minutes. How I love low season. We walked out onto to Duval and noticed the streets were empty. I guess anyone who was there for the July 4th weekend had left. 


It was wonderful walking along Duval at a leisurely pace without trying to maneuver between groups of people. 


As we neared Bagatelle, we saw Brent up on the second balcony wave down to us. We walked up to the hostess and told her we were meeting our friends who were already seated upstairs. 


When we walked up the stairs and out onto the balcony, there was Brent and Julie seated at a nice corner table. We settled into our seats and looked over the menu. I wasn’t exactly starving after the late dinner we had at Latitudes so I went with a couple of fried eggs over medium with a side of link sausage. My husband wound up being more indulgent then me and ordered the eggs benedict. Julie ordered the glazed bacon for all of us to share to start.

Once we placed our order we talked about what the plans were for the day. The weather was perfect for a pool day. Brent and Julie suggested for us to come over to their house where we could spend the afternoon there. Without any hesitation we agreed on a time. We figured after our breakfast at Bagatelle, we would walk on over to the Sunset Tiki Bar to see the other bartender that works there, Candace before going over to their house. 

Then came out the candied bacon. It looked very tempting, but I wasn’t really in the mood for it. Everyone else had a piece and enjoyed it. Next our breakfast was served. 

Brent wound up ordering the egg white omelet served with an arugula salad on the side. It always looks so good when he orders it, but I never do. I should have.

Breakfast as usual was delicious. Bagatelle is always a solid choice when it comes to breakfast.

One of our favorites for breakfast

Whenever my husband and I are in Key West, we make sure we have breakfast at least once at Bagatelle. I love the array of breakfast/brunch items that are available on the menu. It does make ordering a bit of a challenge, but no matter what you choose, you will have a delicious meal to start your day. 


Our most recent visit, I ordered a couple of perfectly cooked eggs over medium, with a side of delicious sausage links and breakfast potatoes. My husband ordered the eggs benedict which were cooked to exactly how he prefers them – not too runny. We were with another couple so we shared the maple glazed bacon which is always a highlight when we dine at Bagatelle. No matter what you are in the mood for, start your day off right with a delicious and tasty meal at Bagatelle.

When everyone was done and ready, we walked down the stairs and out onto Duval. Since we were near Front St. it was a quick walk down to the Galleon. I couldn’t believe it when we walked by Two Friends, how empty it was. That place is always packed with people – especially for breakfast.


We made it to the Galleon and Candace was working. She welcomed us back as we took our corner seats. We all ordered the sweet tea and water with lemon to start. It was the same concoction we were planning on having at the pool later on so it made sense to stick with the same thing.

After chatting for a bit, we thanked Candace and walked back out through the Galleon parking lot. I still don’t understand why they don’t allow you to enter that way if you are a non guest. Maybe to avoid an accident with cars coming and going into the resort?

When we got to the street, Brent and Julie waited for an Uber while we walked back down to Simonton to the Gardens to gather our towels and change into our swimsuits.


We also made a short stop at the liquor store located right past the corner of Angel St. I had shipped down a bottle of Firefly Sweet Tea, but just as a precaution, we grabbed another bottle and several bottles of water, along with lemon juice


We went back to our room to change and pack some sun screen and a bag to carry everything in. I also grabbed the bag of popcorn that Lynn gave us. Speaking of Lynn, for her birthday, she wanted all of us to join her and Al for dinner. So that evening we had reservations at Blue Heaven at 6:00pm which I was looking forward to.


Our next course of action was to grab a bag of towels in the reception area and we were on our way. 


It wasn’t a very far walk to the house that Brent and Julie were renting. We walked up to the door and knocked, but there was no answer. Then we tried the doorbell, but nothing. Then all of a sudden we see Brent and Julie walk up the driveway. Apparently when they were trying to get an Uber, the app would lock up so they couldn’t get a driver. I couldn’t believe we beat them to their house.

We walked in and they both made us feel right at home. Funny my husband noticed a piece of furniture next to the kitchen that looked like the infamous cabinet in the White Lotus (Season 3).


Once we were all settled in, we hopped in the pool. It was a fun afternoon just relaxing in the sunshine. 


After a few hours at Brent and Julie’s we headed back to the Gardens to freshen up. We thanked them for their hospitality and planned on meeting in a few, back at the Gardens. 


Once we were ready for dinner, everyone met up at the Gardens bar. When it was nearing our reservation time, we all walked down to Blue Heaven. 

It was a beautiful evening for a walk. 


We walked in and the hostess sat us at a table to the right side of the bar, which puzzled us since the place was very quiet. (Everyone prefers to sit on the other side in the main area). We asked the hostess if we could sit on the other side and she quickly grabbed the menus off the table and walked us over to another table. Plus it was a larger table to accommodate all of us.


Our server came over and took everyone’s drink order. He mentioned that the catch of the day was grouper. I was planning on having the portobella mushroom entree, but it sounded too good to pass up. After our drink orders were served, everyone placed their order. For myself, I started with the grilled miso eggplant salad and then, with no surprise, I ordered the catch of the day.


Last time we dined at Blue Heaven, we saw this huge grayish chicken. We looked for her, but no sightings this time. It didn’t take long for our appetizers to arrive. My miso eggplant was delicious. I wish there was more eggplant however. 


Then our entrees were served. I couldn’t believe how beautiful the grouper looked and it tasted just as good as it looked. I didn’t realize how hungry I was until I took the first bite. And with that, I didn’t leave anything left on my plate.


Everyone else enjoyed what they ordered, including my husband who opted for the burger. Since it was Lynn’s birthday, we talked her into ordering the key lime pie. When our server brought it over, they put a candle in it. We all sung happy birthday and cheered Lynn as she blew out the candle.

Not just a breakfast place

I know Blue Heaven is known for breakfast, but they also offer lunch and dinner. Personally I enjoy dinner instead of breakfast. Breakfast is usually so crowded and feels a bit rushed. If you go for dinner, it is a totally different vibe. 

I usually order the grilled miso eggplant salad. It is a tasty combination of the grilled eggplant with the miso. You wouldn’t think you would get so much flavor. Another appetizer option that friends of ours usually enjoy is the scallop appetizer. As far as the main courses, there is a nice range of options. If you want something vegetarian,they have two delicious options – the macro bowl or the portobella mushroom. I have had both and they equally full of flavor. My husband usually orders the filet mignon which never fails to disappoint. If you want to order seafood, they always offer the catch of the day. Our most recent visit, I had the grouper special which was served fresh and hot. If you can’t get a table for breakfast and/or you don’t want to wait for hours, give it a try for dinner.

It was a fun evening sharing her birthday and enjoying a delicious dinner together. 


After our dinner, we walked down to the Bali Bar for a nightcap before heading back to the Gardens. 


There wasn’t any music that evening so we just stayed for one before walking back to the Gardens. 


Tuesday, July 8th – La Te Da, Hugh’s View, Kaya Island Eats


Before going our separate ways the night before, we planned on meeting up with Brent and Julie at La De Ta for breakfast. We slept in a little and woke up again to a beautiful sunny day. 

Like every day, we freshened up and walked on over to Cuban Coffee Queen, but not before running into Lynn and Al. I reminded Lynn about going to Hugh’s view that evening.

I had always wanted to go on top of the Studios of Key West to see it, but we could never time it right. This time we didn’t have any dinner reservations, so it was the perfect opportunity to check it out. It was only open from 6-8pm so we would have to grab a bite either before or after. We decided that afterwards would work out better. They were planning on going back to the beach for a while so we told them we would meet up again later.


Again, Cuban Coffee Queen was quiet and no line when we walked on over. Once again, we quickly got our coffee and made the walk down to La Te Da. We took the Simonton St. route instead of Duval since it tends to have more shade cover. 

We made it to La De Ta where I spotted Brent and Julie already there sitting in our favorite little spot.

The other table right next to theirs was vacant so we were able to sit right next to them.

To start, my husband and I ordered a couple of screwdrivers. The bartender came over and told us that the omelet of the day was roasted red peppers, onions, ham and havarti cheese. That made my decision as to what to order come easy. Like the past few times we have eaten at La De Ta, my husband ordered the eggs blackstone. Brent and Julie also ordered the omelet of the day like me. 


We talked about what are plans were for the day. Many of the local musicians were out of town due to the slow season so there wasn’t any place I had in mind to go see live music. And ever since the Smokin’ Tuna closed down, the music scene isn’t the same in my opinion. Yes you get the local musicians playing here and there, but not like seeing Caffeine Carl and the Buzz. And speaking of Carl, we just learning about his rare cancer diagnosis prior to our arrival to Key West.


I did mention to Julie and Brent about wanting to go to Hugh’s View but that wasn’t until later that evening. We figured we would just see how the day goes. Since La De Ta was nearly empty, we didn’t wait long for our orders to arrive. The omelet looked great filled with cheese oozing out of the sides. I couldn’t wait to dig in. I normally don’t get an omelet at La De Ta but I was very happy I did. The omelet was delicious. Both Brent and Julie also reconfirmed my opinion regarding the omelet of the day. My husband also enjoyed his eggs blackstone. While we were finishing up, the sun was starting to shine down on our table. You could feel that it was going to be hot one. 

After the check was settled, we decided that we would stop by the Sunset Tiki Bar at the Galleon again. Knowing the walk down would be really hot, we wound up getting an Uber to drive us. When the Uber showed up, the air conditioner felt wonderful when we got into the car.


It was a quick drive and almost felt guilty not walking but sitting in the air conditioned car, I didn’t. He dropped us off at the end of Front St. We walked along the pier to the bar. The water looked so pretty in the sun.

Candace was working once again so she didn’t even have to ask us what we were drinking. We all had the Deep Eddy Sweet Tea vodka with water and a squeeze of lemon. It is always our go-to drink at the Sunset Tiki Bar. 

We wound up staying for a couple of rounds before peeling ourselves off the chairs. Brent and Julie wanted to head back to their house rental while I wanted to walk around. We said our goodbyes and told them we would see them later at Hugh’s View. 


We walked around before making our way to the Tree Bar. There were empty seats along the side and Teri was behind the bar. It was a win win when we got there. As we were waiting for our drinks to be made, Teri told us that Carl was behind us. At first I was like who? But yes it was Caffeine Carl. He just returned with his wife Erin and her mother from Miami. It was so nice to see him. We gave him hugs and wished him the best of luck for what he is about to battle. I was really happy that we were able to run into him.


When we were done with our drinks, we walked back down Duval to the Gardens trying to pick whatever side of the road had more shade.

We made it back with enough time where we could relax for a bit and take another dip in the pool.


Not before long, it was time to freshen up and get ready for Hugh’s View. I didn’t know what to expect but I was getting excited to try something new. 


We met up with Lynn and Al at the Gardens Bar and then made the short walk down Simonton to Eaton St. I noticed that there were a few other people walking towards the Studios of Key West. 

We walked through the doors and I noticed some sort of art gallery on display. 

Everyone got into the elevator and we took it up to the top of the building.

When we walked out Brent and Julie were already there. We joked saying they keep beating us, but with that said, I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was.

I was concerned that without being much of a covering, we would be too hot. However, it was very comfortable with a light breeze.

We walked over to the bar and my husband ordered me a glass of white wine. 


I was looking around trying to identify what buildings were what from above. The sunset must be amazing from up there I thought. Unfortunately the sun doesn’t set that time of year until after 8pm. I was curious if they would stay open past 8pm allowing people to watch the sun set. 


We would never know because about after an hour or so up there, I started to get famished. There was no way I was going to be able to wait another hour or close to it, to watch the sunset. I felt bad, but I mentioned it to my husband and he didn’t mind. Everyone else was getting hungry as well, so it was a group decision for all of us to take the elevator downstairs and get something to eat.

Perfect Vantage Point to See Key West

Hugh’s View is located on to of the Studios of Key West on Eaton St. Usually it is open to the public Mondays and Tuesdays between the hours of 6-8pm. However, I recommend checking their website for the most up-to-date hours since it does change depending on the season. There is also a bar so you can enjoy views while sipping a nice glass of wine. Sometimes there is live entertainment if you are lucky enough to catch it while visiting Key West.

The views of Key West are beautiful from up top reminding me of when you used to be able to go on top of La Concha to watch the sun set. This is a good alternative to that. I would suggest grabbing light fare before watching the sunset. If you are looking at a different place to see Key West, take the elevator up the Studios of Key West and check out Hugh’s View and there is no charge.

When we got back outside, I didn’t realize Robert The Doll’s house was right across from the Studios of Key West. Julie pointed it out because she and Brent stayed there years ago. 

Since it was fairly close by, we all agreed to go to Kaya for dinner.

We made the short walk down to Duval. 

When we walked in Kaya, the bar was empty. We were all able to sit together along the bar.

To start, I wound up ordering the Boom Shakalaka Coconut Shrimp and my husband ordered their Signature Tuna (nachos) Poke. For my main course, I opted for their mahi sandwich (fried) which I truly enjoyed our previous visit several months prior. 

When our first course came out, I was ready. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and the bam bam sauce was delicious. 


 My husband gave me a tuna poke nacho and that also was tasty. I probably would have been satisfied just having both of the two appetizers, but when my fish sandwich arrived I was ready. My husband ordered the usual rasta pasta with portobello mushrooms. He enjoyed it, but preferred it back when they used to serve the pasta with linguini vs. the spiral pasta they now use, which I have to agree. I have had it with both pasta shapes, and definitely prefer the linguini/spaghetti. I wasn’t sure what everyone else ordered, since it was hard to see the way we were seated. I think Julie had the tuna poke bowl which she enjoyed and Al I believe had the rasta pasta. Everyone else I can’t say for certain.

Can’t go wrong with Kaya

Kaya is a place to go for dinner and no matter what you choose, chances are you will enjoy what you selected. To start, I always order their signature mai tai which is sweet (not too sweet) and refreshing. When they are available as an appetizer special, I tend to get the buffalo cauliflower. It tastes so good you don’t miss the chicken. If you want to try something else, I recommend the Boom Shakalaka Coconut Shrimp or their Signature Tuna Poke Nachos. Either or, they are both packed with flavor. 

For a main course, I would suggest going with their rasta pasta if you are in the mood for something that is a little bit on the spicy side. I find that the rasta sauce reminds me of a combination of pesto meets jerk seasoning. Either way it works and it becomes an addictive combination that I crave. Another favorite of mine, is the mahi mahi sandwich. You can have it fried, blacked or grilled. The fish is served hot and fresh. Their fries are super crispy as well. Kaya also offers a plethora of vegetarian options if you that is your preference. All and all, no matter what you order at Kaya, you can’t go wrong.

After feeling fully satisfied, we paid our tab and headed back out onto Duval. I was too full to really do anything else.

I think everyone else was as well, so we said good bye to Brent and Julie as they were getting into their Uber while we walked back to the Gardens with Lynn and Al.

And we all called it a night.


Wednesday, July 9th – Breakfast Club Too and Back to Brent and Julie’s


This was the first morning we woke up to slightly overcast skies. There wasn’t any rain in the forecast, just clouds. In a way it kept the temperatures down so we didn’t mind. When I checked my phone, Julie texted us asking where we should meet up for breakfast. My husband suggested Breakfast Club Too. We hadn’t been there for a little while and I was up for one of their rostis, which is a pile of home-fried potatoes on a hot cast iron skillet with sour cream and chives on the side and topped with two eggs to order. They have different variations of it that you can choose from. 


We both got ready and freshened up and once again walked across to Cuban Coffee Queen. I do like the coffee at Breakfast Club Too, but couldn’t wait that long for a hot cup of coffee to help wake me up. This time when we got to Cuban Coffee Queen, there were a couple of people ahead of us. We still didn’t have to wait too long for our coffee before walking down Duval to Breakfast Club Too which is located on Green St. 


As we neared Breakfast Club Too, we saw Brent and Julie arriving. Talk about timing. We hugged hello and walked inside. There were a few people waiting to be seated, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as other times. It was still busy, but we only waited a couple of minutes to be seated.


The hostess seated us towards the back. I think it was the same table we dined at several trips ago. Regardless, we sat down and ordered a couple of drinks to start. Their bloody marys look so intriguing but I played it safe and stuck with what I am used to, titos and orange juice. My husband ordered the same thing. Brent and Julie went with a pair of mimosas to start.


My husband and Brent ordered an omelet, while Julie a smoothie bowl called the acai bowl. She explained to us she used to order it when Brent and her would vacation in Hawaii. I think it’s like some sort of porridge? I obviously went with a rostis – the poblano and chorizo kind.

Even though the place was busy, our orders were served in a timely manner. I don’t know how they do it. Every time we have eaten at Breakfast Club Too, regardless how busy they are, you don’t have to wait long. 

The rostis was delicious. As expected I couldn’t finish the entire plate, but I did try. Everyone else enjoyed what they ordered.

Bring Your Appetite

Breakfast Club Too may be known for their bloody marys, but it is the food that shines. I personally enjoy their rostis which are eggs cooked to your order served on top of mass of breakfast potatoes served in a piping hot cast iron skillet. The offer different varieties that will appeal to anyone’s pallet. I had the opportunity to order the poblano pepper and chorizo rostis. The peppers and chorizo are mixed in with the breakfast potatoes, creating a mouthful of flavor in each bite you take. 

If you want to be a little less adventurous, they have excellent omelets. The menu says that they are 3 egg omelets, but if you order one, be sure to have a big appetite. Breakfast items are served with potatoes on the side, but if you prefer grits I would highly recommend it. They served in a bowl topped with cheesy goodness. If you are not in the mood for breakfast, lunch is offered all day. Either way, you won’t leave with an empty stomach.

When we were done, we decided to go back to the Sunset Tiki Bar at the Galleon before camping out at Brent and Julie’s for the afternoon. Ramsey was back behind the bar so it was nice to get to see her again since most likely that would be the last time since we were leaving on Friday (the next day she is back working). 


We didn’t stay too long, but long enough to have a couple of drinks before motivating ourselves to walk back towards the Gardens to change into our swim gear. We thanked Ramsey and gave her hugs goodbye. Like the other day, Brent and Julie opted for an Uber. We made sure that the car was there before walking back and this time it showed up.

Along the way we noticed a new food truck that I had never seen before, called the Wandering Rooster. It was closed so I couldn’t see what type of food it they served. Maybe with that name it was fried chicken of some sort?


We made it back to the Gardens to quickly change. My husband grabbed a couple of towels for us at the check-in / front desk. 


We made the short walk down onto Eaton. The skies were still gray, but again there was no threat of rain and even if it did, the house where Brent and Julie were staying, had a beautiful covered outside area just in case.

Similar to Monday, we spent the afternoon being lazy and relaxing in the pool. 


We talked about what we wanted to do for dinner later on and thought about ordering a couple of pizzas. Sure they deliver right? I have Door Dash on my phone and quickly changed the location from my home address to their house address. I scrolled through the different pizza places and decided on Duettos. I have good things about them and we had never tried their pizza so why not.


When everyone was getting hungry, I went ahead and ordered a couple of pies. I was even able to add a bottle of red wine to the order. I felt like I was back home waiting for the Door Dash order. 


It probably took about 30-35 minutes, but we were in no rush. When I got the alert that the Dasher was near, Julie walked out to the front of the house with me. However when the Dasher arrived, I had to show my ID since I ordered the bottle of wine. Quickly I ran back in the house to grab my license. Good thing I brought it. Once we had the box of pizzas in hand we walked back inside and out onto the patio. 


The pizza looked delicious. My husband and I shared a mushroom pizza, while Brent and Julie shared a pepperoni pizza. We couldn’t finish it all, but being they were staying at the house, Brent and Julie saved the leftovers for a late night snack or lunch for the next day. 

Eventually the skies turned dark and it was time for us to walk back to the Gardens. Once again we thanked Brent and Julie for having a wonderful time at their house. When we were almost at the Gardens, I saw that the moon was full shining above Simonton. 

When we made it back, we quickly hopped in the shower and had a nightcap on our porch before turning in.


Thursday, July 10th – Last Full Day, Pepe’s, Sunset Tiki Bar, The Bali Bar, Willie T’s, La Trattoria 


Why does the last full day always come so quickly? Well this time we were going back home on a Friday instead of a Saturday which we normally due. My husband wanted to get back so that he had time to take care of our lawn, etc. over a weekend instead of trying to do everything on Sunday. I totally understand but kind of wished we were staying until Saturday.


We woke up and the sun was back out shining. After our turns taking showers, I saw that there was a text from Julie asking about meeting up for breakfast again. Where to this morning? Well my husband suggested Pepe’s and I thought it was a great idea. Sometimes Pepe’s can be crowded but the way the week was going, I was pretty sure it wouldn’t be too bad. 

Once we were ready, we headed back out to first, as always, Cuban Coffee Queen, before making our way to Pepe’s. The streets were again quiet as we walked down Duval onto Caroline St. 

Brent and Julie arrived the same time as us, so when got to Pepe’s, we were seated at a nice table. As to be expected it was pretty empty besides the bar area, which my husband and I prefer to sit at, but with two other people it is easier at a 4 top.


Our server came over and we placed our order. I decided to go with a couple of eggs fried over medium with a side of their grits and smoked sausage. 

While we were waiting for our breakfast, I noticed that Pepe’s had their own hot sauce. I sort of remembered but did forget. I couldn’t wait to try it with my eggs. Ironically when Key West Peppers was open several years ago, my husband would be the only one that would sample the hot sauces. Now that I love trying them and even make my own at home, it has sadly closed down. I know you can get their hot sauce online but it isn’t the same.


Soon our breakfast arrived and it was delicious. The hot sauce worked so well with the sausage and grits. I was a happy camper. During our breakfast, we talked about our last day and what we had planned. Honestly we had nothing planned besides dinner later on. Lynn had booked La Trattoria for all of us. 


Knowing it was our last full day in Key West, I did want to hit Willie T’s later to catch Zack Seemiller (whom I still do the funny ads that he posts daily). Plus I also just finished working on all the design work for the up and coming Key West Days in New Hampshire.

It was so weird that we really hadn’t seen any live music during our entire stay. Normally we would go from place to place, and catch live music. It’s kind of crazy how things can change so much in a blink of an eye.


When we were done with our breakfast, we made our way through the back of Schooner’s Wharf and along the Bight.

We made it backto the Sunset Tiki Bar at the Galleon for one last drink and view of the water from the bar. We tend to gravitate to the Sunset Tiki Bar while we are in Key West. I think it is because it is just off the main drag and the views are beautiful. 


Candace was working behind the bar again so I was glad we were able to see her before we left. After talking for a bit we headed back out and said our goodbyes. Brent and Julie decided to go back to their house.  Since it was our last day, I wanted to take the sights in one last time.


We wound up at the shops at Mallory Square. I saw a necklace of a manatee and thought about making the purchase, but decided not to. Now I wish I did. It was really cute. 


Our next stop wound up being First Flight. We sat down at the bar and I ordered the Amber Ale while my husband ordered the Maverick IPA. Unfortunately there was a pop up shower before we arrived, making all the chairs near the road wet, so we stayed put. I do enjoy sitting along the railing there and watching the occasional trolley and/or conch train go by.


Since our motto was one and done for the afternoon, we finished our beer and walked back towards Duval. Again I wanted to stop at Willie T’s, but as we were walking past the entrance to the Bali Bar, we had to stop for one more. When walked back in to the bar, there were a bunch of people at the bar. I guess the cat is out of the bag so to speak about the place. Luckily the side of the bar had several empty seats where we sat down. Jay was back behind the bar so we talked to him for a few. 


Then it was time for our next and most likely the last stop before heading back to the Gardens. We walked into Willie T’s and Zack was playing. As we grabbed a couple of seats at table we waved hello. Thankfully it wasn’t too crowded. I remember the last time we were there back in April, it was nearly impossible to find a table near where Zack was performing.


My husband walked over to the bar and ordered a Miller Lite for me and mixey drink for himself. It was nice to be able to finally listen to some live music. Yes the Gardens has nightly entertainment, but its more for relaxing while you are enjoying a glass of wine.


I was looking at the phone and saw it was getting later in the afternoon and we still had to pack for our departure the next day. So we wound up paying our tab and said our goodbyes. When we got back to the Gardens, Lynn and Al were hanging out by the pool. We said our hellos and told them we would return after packing up our things and freshened up for dinner.


Our two bags of laundry that we had the Gardens wash for us (they have a place that picks up laundry for guests) was returned to our room. So packing up our things was effortlessly. We just empty the bags and put our folded clothes in to our luggage. 

After getting everything in order, we both freshened up and went back to the Gardens Bar to join Lynn and Al.

Then Brent and Julie showed up so we all had a cocktail before walking on over to La Trattoria. Again, it was a beautiful evening and the perfect temperature to make the walk down Duval. 

When we walked in the place was practically empty.

It didn’t look like reservations were necessary, but we were seated in the same table we sat out last year towards the back. 


Our server came back over and took our order. I decided on the caesar salad to start and for my main course the scallop scampi. My husband went with the beef carpaccio and the pasta norma which had some sort of array of tomatoes, basil, ricotta cheese and eggplant. Most likely due to the fact, the restaurant wasn’t very busy, our first course was served quickly. 


Once the server placed all our dishes on the table, I asked to get our picture taken. I figured it was a good opportunity since it was our last time we would all be together.


Then our main course arrived. My scallops were cooked very well – not over done and very tender. The scampi sauce was just what I was in the mood for. My husband enjoyed his pasta dish and so did everyone else. I don’t think anyone was in the mood for dessert besides coffee. I opted for an espresso and so did my husband.

Classic Tasty Italian Food

If you are in the mood for italian, check out La Trattoria. It is conveniently located on Duval so it isn’t hard to find. The inside is modestly decorated with a white interior with wine bottles displayed around. The couple of times we have dined at La Trattoria, we have been with a larger party so we have been seated towards the back of the restaurant. From there you have a good vantage point of the entire dining room which isn’t terribly big.

Appetizers range from beef carpaccio (which my husband ordered) to a classic caesar salad. I tried my husband’s beef carpaccio and I was surprised to taste a hint of truffle which worked very well. I could have eaten more but I didn’t want to clean my husband’s plate. I had the caesar salad which was your typical caesar salad, nothing mind blowing but tasty.

Pasta entrees are in abundance at La Trattoria, but unfortunately when I ordered the scallops in a scampi sauce, they were served with a side of wild rice. I generally prefer scampi being served with linguini or spaghetti. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the dish had a ton of garlic which I love, but I was missing the pasta. My husband had the past norma which had fresh basil, tomatoes, onions, garlic and eggplant in tomato sauce, topped with salted ricotta cheese. It looked delicious and was curious how it tasted so tried a little and it was very good.

When everyone was finished we walked back to the Gardens.


When we arrived back at the Gardens Hotel, we grabbed a couple of chairs around the pool and took it in for one last time, as we enjoyed each others company.

Soon it was time to get some sleep since we were heading back to NJ the following day. Brent and Julie took an Uber back to their house, while Lynn and Al retired to their room.


Friday, July 11th – Going Home

Since we packed up most of our things the day before, we really didn’t have much to do once we freshened up. I did go through all of our toiletries and threw out anything that wouldn’t make it back due to liquid restrictions and room in our luggage. (I always send a box down a head of time of all our toiletries for that reason).

My husband checked his phone and Julie sent us a message. We agreed to meet back at La De Ta for our last breakfast before we headed out. Our flight wasn’t until 2:15pm so we didn’t have to rush, but I did want to be out of our room by 11am.


First we walked on over to Cuban Coffee Queen. Since it was a Friday and the start to the weekend, there were more people waiting on line. Thankfully it wasn’t too long before having our coffee once again in hand. 


It was another beautiful sunny morning. Now that I think of it, I think this was the first trip during the July 4th week, where we didn’t have a lot of downpours which I was surprised about. 

We made it to La Te Da, but when we walked in, there were people sitting in our preferred tables. At first I thought Brent and Julie beat us once again, but as we got closer it wasn’t them. No big deal, so we decided to sit at the bar which was completely empty. 

The bartender came over and handed us a couple of menus and told her we were waiting for two more people. While we were waiting for Brent and Julie we ordered a couple of screwdrivers. Why not, it was our last day. Not before long we saw Brent and Julie walk in. The sat down next to us and we looked over the menu. I really don’t need to look at the menu anymore, since we have been there so many times, I think I have it memorized. 

I decided to go with the omelet of the day again since the other day it was so tasty. My husband decided on the regular eggs benedict. Julie ordered scrambled eggs, while Brent also ordered the omelet the day. Its always so hard for me to relax the day you are leaving. I keep thinking about our flight, all the things I need to do when I get home, etc. 

Our breakfast arrived and the omelet looked just about the same as the other day. I took a bite and it was delicious. Since I was feeling a bit anxious about leaving, I couldn’t really finish my meal. I tried but I wasn’t very hungry. 

I thought once we were done, we would say good bye to Brent and Julie since they were having family coming in the next day and wanted to get the house ready. However, when we were leaving La Te Da, they said they would walk back with us to the Gardens to keep us company before we had to leave. I thought that was so nice.

We made it back and headed to our room to grab our things and of course making sure nothing we needed was left behind. Once we were all set, we met Brent and Julie back by the pool area. We grabbed a couple of chairs and sat down. Then we saw Lynn and Al. They weren’t leaving until the following day. I didn’t think we would see them before we left, but I am glad we did. We said our good byes as they were heading back out to the beach for a few hours.

Time at first seemed to stand still, but then before I knew it, the clock behind the Gardens Bar said 12:45pm. The time for me to order an Uber. So we gathered our things and said our good byes and headed back out to Angela St. I always hate hearing the sound of our luggage being rolled out of the Gardens, but I love the sound when we are arriving at the Gardens.

I hit pickup on the Uber app and within a couple of minutes our driver was there. We made the short ride to the airport and walked in to see the TSA line. It wasn’t too bad, but since the old Conch Flyer restaurant was no longer, our only choice was to go through security.

Ironically, we just learned that TSA had dropped the requirement of taking off your shoes if you are not TSA Pre. However, when I went through security, I was “randomly selected” where they wiped my Keen shoes and I had to stand there for 15 seconds. Okay – I am TSA Pre? So after the awkward stance for a several seconds I was allowed to pass on through.


We walked into the fairly new airport and saw that the Chili’s restaurant was fully open and there were a few more concessions open as well. Since we had some time before we had to board, we walked into the Chili’s and found a couple of open seats at the bar. I wonder how easy that would have been to do during high season. The bartender came over and we ordered a couple of drinks. My husband went ahead and took a look at the menu and ordered the chicken fingers. Within a few minutes the ordered arrived and wow, the plate was stacked.


I would have tried one, but I tend to lose my appetite when I am getting ready to hop on a plane. When we were ready to go, I asked for the check. I had some cash on me so I offered to pay with cash. When the bartender came back to get change, it took a while. I guess next time I would probably use my credit card. Eventually he returned with my change and by then we had to book it to the gate.


When we got to the gate, they were getting ready to board after the flight from Newark emptied out. I always get so jealous seeing everyone so happy deplaning. I know that was us several days ago, but the feeling is hard to ignore. 


Soon we were on the plane and everything was on schedule. The flight was uneventful and eventually I could see Lady Liberty below. 

At least we were arriving on a beautiful summer day and in a way I was relieved that even though we missed an extra day in Key West, we had the entire weekend to regroup and get back into the swing of things.

We landed a few minutes early and met up with our friend/car service driver who was right on time. Thankfully Route 80 was fully repaired after months of closure for sink hole repairs a couple months ago. About an hour or so, we were back home with our little guy, Kobe.


Sometimes, you don’t need to do much at all to have a truly great time. Though it’s bittersweet to see how the music scene has changed, my heart is always full when we return to this place I love—where familiar faces greet us, and special people we once met here have become lifelong friends in my happy place.

Springtime in Key West – April 19-26, 2025

After our last very cold trip to Key West just several months ago in January, I was getting excited for our April trip. April tends to be the perfect time to go to Key West. We usually have beautiful weather that is warm but not terribly hot and humid. Plus the rains tend to not be an issue. A few days before our trip I looked at the forecast. It looked perfect. A little windy yes, but otherwise sunny and in the upper 70s were in the forecast.

This trip officially made it our 35th time returning to Key West. I still can’t believe that we have been going back to Key West so often and I still get that excited feeling as the trip nears. It was also the same week as the Conch Republic Celebration Days in Key West and the NFL Draft. 


Saturday, April 19th – Arrival Day


Our flight was scheduled for 9:15am out of Newark Liberty Airport so I reserved for our car service to pick us up at 6am. All of our alarms were set and I had no issues waking up that morning. The driver was on time and made it to Newark Airport just past 7:00am. We were flying out of Terminal A so going through TSA was a breeze. Since we had some time, we made a stop at the United Club lounge. We ordered a couple of screwdrivers and toasted to another return trip to Key West.

The usual suspects, our friends Brent and Julie and also Lynn and Al were also joining us in Key West. Of course we were all staying at the Gardens Hotel as usual. This also contributed to the excitement we both had. After a couple of cocktails it was time to walk down to our gate.

Luckily there was no issues with the flight, so we took off on time. Not before long I could start to see the beautiful colors of the ocean and gulf from the airplane window.

I was thinking to myself how is the new terminal going to look in Key West? I saw on social media that just a few days prior to our arrival, the long anticipated (and over due) new Key West terminal had opened and that we would most likely be deplaning through the new terminal and not walking out on to the tarmac. 

Once we landed, our plane parked up to the gate. We gathered our carry-on luggage and walked out into the new terminal.

It felt so strange to see the new airport. There was so much more space and seating for all the flights that come into and out of Key West. I noticed there was a Chili’s restaurant in the terminal but it didn’t look open just yet. There was however, a another place where you could buy snacks and grab a drink if need be.


We were walked out of the new terminal and actually were directed down the stairs where you used to go to depart for your flight. Soon we were in the baggage claim area and made a quick move out the doors to grab a taxi. The air was warm and the sun was shining. It felt so good to feel the warm air. No one was waiting for a taxi and immediately we were told to go in the first taxi waiting in line. 


We put our luggage in the back of the taxi and hopped in. It was the typical short drive onto to Simonton and then down to Angela St. As soon as I saw that yellow wall I new we were close. When the taxi pulled up to the Gardens and stopped, I notice that the Gardens Hotel had the Easter Prosecco Hunt banner that I recently designed for them hanging up. A felt humbled when I saw it.

Luckily no one else was at the reception desk when we walked in. Rhoda was behind the desk and welcomed us back. I felt like we just saw here, well technically it was 3 months prior but it felt like we were just there. 

Our room wasn’t ready yet, but we weren’t planning on really doing anything on our arrival day. The only couple of things I had on the schedule for that day was dinner at the Red Shoe Bistro and then afterwards, hopefully stop by the Backyard Bar after dinner to see the Marshall Morlock Band at the Backyard Bar.

Rhoda told us she would give me a call on my phone when our room was ready, but we told her she could just find us at the bar. We walked back out to the pool area and saw Phil behind the bar. 


He welcomed us back and had a couple of cold Heinenkens waiting for us. Not before long we saw our friends Brent and Julie. They were already staying at the Gardens for several days before we arrived. They pulled up a couple of chairs and we talked for a few. Then not before long we heard two familiar voices. Lynn and Al arrived. They flew out of LaGuardia and were supposed to land before us, but there were some sort of technical issues with their arrival flight. I think they mentioned something about the door of the plane.


Of course Lynn had bags filled with her delicious popcorn from her store and cute gifts to give all of us that she usually does. Rhoda then came out and gave us our room keys. I didn’t want to tear away from the bar, but my husband and I thought it would be the best move to unpack our things before we got too comfortable. Lynn and Al went to unpack their things in their room as well.

After we unpacked our things we walked back to the pool bar. Brent and Julie went back to their room to freshen up for dinner while we talked to Lynn and Al for a bit as we settled in. It felt so good to be back “home” in Key West at the Gardens Hotel. 


The afternoon flew by quickly and soon it was time to freshen up for dinner. When we were set to go, we reconvened at the pool bar with Brent and Julie. The reservations were for 6pm so we didn’t have too much time for another beverage before walking down to the Red Shoe Bistro.

We settled up our tab and walked out onto to Duval down to Petronia. 

As we neared the Red Shoe Bistro I noticed people were already standing outside waiting to go in. It kind of reminded me of going to Lola’s. Red Shoe has become quite popular most likely due to the wonderful reviews it receives. I can understand why because we had never had a bad meal there. The food and service are always equally spot on.

Once the doors were opened, we had to wait a couple of minutes for our turn to be seated. Soon it was time to give my name to the hostess who then walked us to our perfect table in the corner. Then our server came over to take our drink order and tell us the fish of the day special – which was black grouper. 

I wound up ordering a bottle of red wine for the table since we were all in the mood for a glass. To start I ordered the caesar salad followed by the yellowtail snapper. My husband ordered the lobster roll profiteroles followed by the beef stroganoff which he normally does. Julie and Brent shared the capresse salad and they both opted for the black grouper special.

After we placed our order, we were presented with an amuse bouche of a cracker topped with boursin cheese. 


It paired nicely with the red wine. Next our appetizers arrived and everyone enjoyed what they ordered, followed by our main courses. 


Just like previous visits, the food was served hot and delicious. When we were done with our dinner we still had some time to spare before checking out the Marshall Morlock Band at the Backyard Bar.

Red Shoe Bistro – No wonder it is rated #1 on TripAdvisor

We have been dining at Red Shoe for several years now and never have a bad meal. Recently we dined at Red Shoe and enjoyed everything from their grilled caesar salad or their signature dish – Beef Stroganoff. I find that the service is always on point despite being completely full during one of their two seatings. As soon as we were seated, our service came over right away to take our drink order. The Red Shoe offers a nice selection of wine to choose from. Our first course (amuse bouche) consisted of boursin cheese on top of a crispy cracker that paired well with the wine. For appetizers, my husband ordered the lobster roll profiteroles and I went with the caesar salad which is presented as hearts of grilled romaine lettuce. Both plates were empty when our server came back to retrieve them. Our main meals consisted of the beef stroganoff for my husband and I opted for the yellowtail snapper serverd over their lovely risotto and grilled asparagus. Sometimes we will share their key lime pie to finish off the meal, but we were both at full capacity after we, again, cleared both of our plates. If you get a chance to visit Key West, be sure to make a reservation at the Red Shoe Bistro. You will realize while it is consistently rated #1 on TripAdvisor.


We headed back out onto Duval and started walking down towards Willie T’s. As we neared Willie T’s we heard a familiar voice behind the guitar. It was John LaMere. I saw a couple of tables that were available and suggested that we would stop in for a few. Everyone was onboard so we walked in and grabbed an empty table by the street. (I always love those tables because you can watch people walk by and also listen to the live music without being in the way.)  

When we sat down John immediately recognized all of us. Of course I had to request a Pearl Jam song. He obliged and played Elderly Woman.

We hadn’t seen John LaMere play at Willie T’s for a while and it was fun that we stopped by on a whim like that.

Once his set was over, we made the short walk to the Backyard Bar. The Marshall Worlock Band was already playing when we walked in. There were several tables along the side that were empty so we grabbed a couple of seats. 

Eventually the long travel day started to set in and I was definitely feeling it. We all made it back to the Gardens to enjoy our first night of sleep.


Sunday, April 20th – Easter Sunday

Julie had made reservations for Easter Brunch at Latitude’s several months earlier, knowing we had to be at the ferry dock by 9:45am. We planned on taking an Uber so that we wouldn’t get too hot walking over.

We woke up to a beautiful sunny morning. There was a breeze, but it felt refreshing and not too cold. My husband and I took turns getting ready and when we walked outside of our room there was a little surprise. An adult Easter basket for the both of us. We later figured out that it was the bartender Phil from the Gardens that had pulled it together. It was such a nice surprise.

We then made short walk on over to cuban coffee queen for a much needed cup of coffee.

Maybe since it was Easter, the line was fairly short. My husband placed our order of two cuban americans with cream and no sugar. Within a few minutes his name was called and we took our coffee back to the Gardens to meet up with Brent and Julie. 

On the walk back, I wanted to take a picture of me standing next to the Easter Processo Hunt event that I designed for the Gardens Hotel. I remember seeing it hanging on the yellow wall when our taxi driver dropped us off the day before. 

Lynn and Al were finishing up breakfast that the Gardens offers each and every morning. We chatted for a couple of minutes before meeting up with Brent and Julie. Once we were in front of the Gardens on Angela St., Julie put in the Uber request. Within minutes our Uber appeared.


It was a quick drive since it is a pretty short walk, but again we didn’t want to get all sweaty and whatnot for Latitudes. After the Uber driver dropped us off, we walked down to catch the water taxi over to Latitudes. You could see other people waiting dressed in their finest Easter wear. What a difference a few months make I thought to myself. Just about 3 months ago when we were there in January, it was so cold. It was actually a bit uncomfortable eating outside with the cold winds, even though they had some outdoor space heaters surrounding the dining area. This time, the weather was picture perfect.


Soon you could see the water taxi making its way around the large cruise ship that was docked. We waited for the Sunset Key guests to exit the water taxi before we could go on. It seemed like there were more people leaving Sunset Key then going to Sunset Key. Then again, Hot Tin Roof is the go to spot for a Sunday Brunch and especially that it was Easter.

We sat in our usual spot facing the dock. Once everyone was loaded on, we made our way over to Latitude’s.


The water looked so pretty – hues of turquoise that were so vibrant.


We exit the water taxi after we docked and followed the hostess to the restaurant. Then we were lead to a nice table outside. To start, we ordered a few breakfast cocktails – Tito’s and orange juice. I ordered the classic breakfast with a couple of eggs and breakfast sausage. 


While we waited for our orders to arrive, we talked about what we had planned for the day. We did all want to check out the Easter Prosecco Hunt event at the Gardens later on that day. No one was planning on participating, but we wanted to watch it.


Soon our breakfast arrived and it was a nice way to start the day and celebrate Easter. Everyone enjoyed their meals. In fact we decided to order another round which I usually tend to stick with one drink in the morning, but it was a holiday.


When we were ready to go, we walked back down to the dock to catch the water taxi back. We timed it right so that we didn’t have to wait too long. The ride back was a bit more crowded then the trip there. When we arrived back, there were a lot more people waiting to go to Latitude’s. I was glad that we had the earlier reservation.

It felt good to stretch our legs and walk through Mallory Square. 


 My husband and I wanted to walk on over to the Sunset Tiki Bar at the Galleon. Brent and Julie also wanted to check it out, so we walked down Front St. to the tiki bar. 


Ramsey was behind the bar which I had a feeling because she usually works on Sundays. I gave her a hug hello and she welcomed us back. Similar to last time in January we selected 4 chairs on the corner. This time, however, the tarps weren’t down blocking the wind nor was Ramsey putting together hot cider.


We ordered a couple of drinks and chatted for a bit. Then Brent and Julie wanted to head back to the Gardens to relax for a bit before the festivities began there. We decided to stay for one more. Then the owner Phil came and talked to us for a few. 


There was still a good part of the day yet, so we asked for the tab and made our way back onto the streets of Key West. 


As we were walking down Duval, I saw the sign for the Bali Bar. (The Bali Bar is part of the Key West Hotel which is fairly new. We discovered it, on accident during our last visit to Key West.)


Wanting to check it out again, we walked down the alley to the bar covered with the huge palapa. It always looks so inviting. No one was there so we had a choice of seating. We sat down and ordered a couple of drinks.


While we were talking to the bartender, my husband and I both received a text from Julie. She told us that the Gardens was packed with people for the Easter Event. I am glad she gave us the heads up, because after we finished our drinks we walked back to the Gardens. And couldn’t believe how packed it was. 


I forgot that the Gardens hotel was also doing the best Easter Bonnet contest. People were wearing elaborate hats and they were all dressed up for Easter – including Lynn!

We wound up getting a couple of drinks at the pool bar and finding a place where we could watch the festivities and not be in the way. Both Phil and Portia were behind the bar serving up drinks for everyone.

Then I spotted Jim the general manager at the Gardens.  Hi Jim!


The afternoon went by quickly and before we knew it, it was time for jazz. As soon as the Easter event was over, the Gardens staff came back out and rearranged the tables. We wound up staying to listen for a few since we were already there. 


Lynn and Al mentioned that they were going to go dancing at La Te Da for a little bit and asked us if we wanted to come along. I know Julie made dinner reservations for all of us later that evening at La Trattorria but we still had time. So my husband and I joined them. 


We shared an Uber down to La Te Da. When we arrived it was busy as well with people congregating by the bar and dancing in the back part of the restaurant. What a different scene it was verses the usually morning breakfast crowd.


While Lynn, Al and my husband danced to a few songs, I found a seat at the bar. I starting talking to another elderly guest who I believe was staying at La De Ta. At this point I was starting to feel the day, the sun, the drinks, etc.


When my husband came back over to check on me, he suggested that we should get something to eat. I reminded him about the dinner at La Trattoria, but we both knew I probably wouldn’t have made it much longer without eating anything. 


So we left La Te Da and made a quick stop at the Gardens to freshen up. My husband reached out to Julie on her phone and let her know our new plans. We walked back out onto Angela and decided on Kaya Island Eats since the location is so convenient to the Gardens hotel.


We walked in and the place was empty – most likely since it was Easter Sunday. I didn’t realize how hungry I was until I started looking over the menu. The first think I wanted to order was the buffalo cauliflower bites. So when the bartender came over I told him that was my choice for an appetizer, followed by the fried grouper sandwich. My husband ordered the tuna poke nachos for us to share and the rasta pasta with chicken.

Our courses were served promptly. It was just what I needed. While we were eating, we saw Brent, Julie, Al and Lynn walking down towards La Trattoria. I felt bad, but there was no way I would have made it and/or enjoy myself.


When we were done with our meals it was the perfect evening to walk back to the Gardens. We found a couple of chairs in the gazebo and waited for our friends to return from dinner. When they returned we talked about the meals we had for dinner. I didn’t last much longer after that so I called it a night and headed to our room.


Monday, April 21st – La Te Da, Hog’s Breath, Milagro

It wasn’t the best night of sleep, but after my husband showered, I pulled myself out of bed and did the same. The shower did give me some life back and all I needed was a fresh hot cup of coffee. So of course, once we were ready to start our day we walked back to cuban coffee queen. 


Again there wasn’t much of a line so we had our coffee in hand within minutes. It was another beautiful day with a gentle breeze and low humidity. We walked back to the Gardens to meet up again with Brent and Julie.


We tend to have breakfast at La Te Da for our first morning in Key West, but that had to wait with our Easter brunch at Latitudes the day before.

It wasn’t too hot yet so we decided to make the walk down Simonton and cross over to Duval when we got closer to our destination.


When we arrived at La Te Da, it looked more like what I am accustomed to. It was quiet and our two tables behind the hostess stand were unoccupied. 


We sat down and made ourselves comfortable. The bartender came over and handed us a few menus. My husband and I ordered a couple of screwdrivers (only have one I thought to myself). Julie ordered a bellini and Brent opted for a cappucino.

For breakfast I went with the omelete of the day while my husband ordered the La Te Da blackstone benedict.

Brent and Julie both went with the classic breakfast of scrambled eggs and bacon. After our drinks arrived, we sat back and watched the world go by on Duval. It appeared that people had left from the weekend.

When my ordered arrived, I was surprised as to how wonderful the omelet looked. I usually don’t order the omelet of the day, but I was so happy I did. It definitely fueled me up for the day. Everyone else said their meals were very good. 

After our breakfast, we walked back towards the Gardens. I did want to stop at one of the shops along the way that sells Chubbie shirts. We walked in the shop during our last visit, and I regretted not getting one for my husband. They have these nice shirts for dinner but with that dri-fit sort of material that doesn’t wrinkle. 

So before making it back to the Gardens, we stopped in the store I believe it was called Shadow and Fish?  We walked in and I towards the Chubbie shirts. Both Brent and my husband made their picks. After trying them on, purchases were made. I was looking for something for myself but nothing struck me.

With our shirts in tow, we walked back to the Gardens to drop off our bags. 


Brent and Julie decided to stay behind while we ventured out for the day. I told Julie that we were planning on stopping at the Hog’s Breath later on to catch part of Zack Seemiller’s show. We agreed that we would meet up later at Hog’s Breath.


My husband and I then made the walk back onto Duval. Our first stop landed us back at our go to place, the Sunset Tiki Bar at the Galleon. 


We walked in and this time it was a different face (the bartender). I remember her from a few times back, but I couldn’t remember her name. Regardless she was friendly and we ordered a couple of drinks. There were more people at the bar this time then the day before. Probably the start of the timeshare people coming in for the week that were staying at the Galleon.


Some were already sunning themselves by the edge of the boardwalk. We enjoyed a couple of drinks before making it down to the Hog’s Breath. I was hoping that it wasn’t going to be so crowded like last time. 

However last time, due to the cold weather, no one was out on the water. This time with the weather being next to nearly perfect to go out in the water, Hog’s Breath wasn’t too bad. We were able to get a couple of seats at the bar near where Zack was playing.


We waved hello and ordered a couple of beers from Stephanie at the bar. While we were enjoying the music, we heard back from Julie saying that they were going to stay at the Gardens. We told them that we would head back in a few. After listening for a bit, we decided to make our move towards the Gardens. We had dinner reservations later that evening at Milagro and I was not going to miss it.  As we waved good bye to Zack we walked back down to Duval. 


The streets weren’t too busy so it was an easy walk down the street. The sun felt great as the light winds continued. As we neared the entrance to the Bali Bar we thought about going in. Well we did. We walked in and selected a couple of seats at the bar. 


We talked to the bartender for a bit who was originally from New Jersey. The mojito I ordered was the perfect drink after having a couple of Miller Lites at Hog’s Breath. Still needing some time to freshen up before dinner, we paid our tab and walked back to the Gardens.


It was a nice afternoon to relax before dinner. Once we both freshened up we met back up with Brent and Julie at the pool bar. Milagro is a bit of a walk especially if it is hot out. So we decided to get an Uber to take us. 

Once we arrived at Milagro we walked in to be seated.

The place was fairly empty so I don’t think reservations were actually needed, but we wound up getting a nice table nevertheless.

I still love the atmosphere with all the water cascading against the glass. Then at night the place lights up in different colors.


To start I selected the prickly pear margarita. It just sounded good to me. My husband and Brent ordered an old fashion and Julie selected a mango margarita for her drink of choice. 

There was a small piece of paper on the table with the evening’s specials listed. I was so excited when I saw that they had ceviche as an appetizer special and it was with black grouper. For my main course I choose the roasted mushroom fettucini. I have seen it a few times on the menu and always wanted to give it a try so I thought tonight was the night. My husband ordered his usual two choices, first the fried calamari, followed by the prime rib.

When my margarita was served, it almost looked too pretty to drink. 


I gave it a try and the taste was simply perfect. It wasn’t too sweet and yet not too sour. The balance worked. Soon our appetizers arrived and I was eager to try the ceviche since I haven’t had it in a while. (I used to love the ceviche at the old Deuce’s Off the Hook and Turtle Kraal.) The first bite was tasty and delicious. 


 I did enjoy it. And I also had a few samples of my husband’s order. The fried calamari was just as good as it looked.


Then it was time for the main event – our dinner course. When the fettucini arrived it was plated nicely but I thought the portion appeared to be smaller then what I was expecting.

My husband’s prime rib on the other hand was picture perfect.


I took a bite of the pasta and the flavors were spot on. It was so good that I finished the entire plate and was thinking to myself, thank goodness that was the portion because it wound up being the perfect amount. Brent and Julie also enjoyed their meals. To end the meal my husband and I each ordered an espresso.

Milagro – Wonderful Ambience and Food in One Place

My husband and I haven’t been to Milagro since the prior year and wanted to go back. I love the atmosphere at the place with the cascading waterfalls along the glass surrounding the tables. We were seated at a table right next to one of the waterfalls. The entire place is very open with full glass windows, but at night the lights come on creating a colorful spectacle. To start off our meal, I ordered the prickly pear margarita while my husband enjoyed an old fashion. The margarita had a perfect balance between flavorful without being too sweet. The specials were printed out on a card that was placed on our table. When I reviewed the specials I saw that they had grouper ceviche for an appetizer. I was so excited since I had not had ceviche for quite some time. My husband ordered the fried calamari for his appetizer. Next I decided to go with the roasted mushroom fettuccini and my husband selected the prime rib which he has had before. Our appetizers arrived and they did not disappoint. Followed by our main dishes as well. My husband’s prime rib was cooked perfectly while my fettuccini was full of flavor. Even though it is located inside the Santa Maria Suites you wouldn’t realize it. The restaurant may be a little out of the way, but it is a wonderful place to experience a beautiful setting and terrific food. 

When we were done with our meal and completely stuffed, everyone wanted to walk back to the Gardens. It was a nice evening and also we wanted to walk off some of the calories everyone had ingested. By the time we made it back to the Gardens, Lynn and Al were there. 

My husband grabbed a couple of waters for us and we gathered in the gazebo for a little bit.  Then of course a food coma was settling in so it was time to get some sleep.


Tuesday, April 22nd – The Saint, Sunset Tiki Bar, Blue Heaven


It was another sunny warm morning to wake up to. My husband and I freshened up and made our walk down to Cuban Coffee Queen. We didn’t have any plans that day so we weren’t rushing to get anywhere. 


When we walked back to the Gardens we talked to Lynn and Al again who were finishing up their breakfast at the Gardens. We sat near the pool bar as we waited for Brent and Julie. When they met up with us we talked about where to go for breakfast. I suggested Breakfast Club Too, but it was nearing 10am and it would most likely be crowded at that point in the morning.


Then Brent suggested the Saint. We had a nice breakfast there back in January (at the Burgundy Bar) so it was an easy sell for me. I just hoped that we could get that nice 4 top table we sat at the last time would be available.


We made the walk down Duval to onto Eaton St. When we walked into the Burgundy Bar we saw that there were no occupied tables inside. The bartender was behind the bar and we motioned to the empty table on the side. He said to seat ourselves and he would be right over. Then I noticed him walking outside with a couple of drinks. There were people dining there, but they were sitting outside. 

It was a beautiful morning so I could see why. I had to make a quick stop to the restroom before we ordered and as I walked by the people dining outside, I thought that maybe we should have sat outside.

When I walked back in, we all placed our orders. I wound ordering one of their omelets and my husband ordered a couple of eggs. I think that Brent ordered an omelet as well and I know Julie ordered the grits. Again we were in no rush since we didn’t have any plans. Good thing, because the Saint isn’t exactly speedy when it comes to bringing out your breakfast. It was all good as we enjoyed each other’s company and conversation. 


Eventually our breakfast arrived and I couldn’t believe the grits that Julie ordered. They looked amazing with melted cheese, bits of bacon and scallions all scattered on top. I should have ordered that I thought. My omelet was delicious and hot. I tend to get worried when meals take a while (especially breakfast) that the eggs will be served cold. Who wants cold eggs? Unless it is egg salad or deviled eggs.


Breakfast was enjoyed by all and once we paid the tab we walked back onto Eaton. The sun felt good because the air conditioning was on full blast inside the Burgundy Bar. As I started to warm back up, we walked down Duval towards to Front St. And yes, we made our way back to the Sunset Tiki Bar at the Galleon.

This time Candice was behind the bar. It was good to see her again. We missed her last time since she was on maternity leave. She gave us hugs as we grabbed a couple of seats at the bar. 

We talked for a bit and we were going to leave, but then Lynn and Al showed up. 


Brent and Julie were already on their way out, but we decided to stay for one more. Lynn and Al never had been to the tiki bar before and they were quite impressed with the view. We told them how it is one of our favorite places to hang out at while we’re in Key West, since it is sort of out of the way and usually on the quieter side. 

Eventually we made it back to the Gardens to relax by the pool for the afternoon, but first I had to get another picture of my next banner I also designed, for the Kentucky Derby event that is held annually at the Gardens called “Talk Derby To Me”.


 I had made reservations at Blue Heaven that evening for all of us. It had been several trips since we have dined there, and I wanted to go back. Breakfast is just too busy and I never feel like waiting for a table, so making a reservation for dinner is a win win for me. You still experience the vibe, but yet you don’t have to wait and / or stand around for a table. Plus I find their dinner menu much more enjoyable then their breakfast – but who doesn’t like a good lobster eggs benedict now and again?


I made the reservations for 7pm thinking that maybe we could swing by Hugh’s View on the top of the Studios of Key West for a pre-dinner cocktail. I thought that they opened at 5pm on Tuesdays, but when I checked again right before we left for Key West, the website said 6pm. I didn’t want to change our dinner plans, so I figured maybe another time. 


After a nice afternoon at the Gardens we quickly freshened up for dinner. Everyone met at the pool bar for a beverage before walking down to Blue Heaven. The weather was perfect to dine outside that evening. When everyone was ready, we made the walk down to Blue Heaven. 


There were a handful of people waiting to be seated, but nothing too crazy. I walked up to the hostess and gave her my name. 


Within minutes, we were escorted to a great table right in the middle. As we were settling in, I noticed that the entertainment was Claire Finley and another guitarist. Wow we haven’t seen Claire play in quite some time. 


Our server came over and took our drink order and while we were waiting for our beverages, I debated as to what to get for dinner. I loved their portobello mushroom entree, but also have tried their macro bowl in the past. I know it seems a bit unexciting to order a vegeterian dish at Blue Heaven while they have other options, but I have enjoyed both. I also enjoy jamaican jerk chicken, but I prefer it prepared with a wet marinade vs. a dry rub like Blue Heaven does.


When our server came back with our drinks, I made the decision what I wanted to order. I first choose the miso eggplant as my appetizer and then for my entree I went with the macro bowl. My husband decided to go with the yellowtail snapper for his main course. It was a nice evening enjoying everyone’s company. 


Our appetizers soon arrived and I could not wait to dig into the miso eggplant appetizer. It has become one of my favorite things on the menu. I took the first bite and it was as delicious as I remembered. It seems strange, miso glazed eggplant, but it works wonderfully. 


Then our main meals came out and my miso bowl was so colorful. I took one bite and wow the flavor. You wouldn’t think that much flavor from all veggies and whatnot, but you don’t miss any meat or seafood at all. While everyone was enjoying their meals we noticed a very, very large gray chicken. One member of the staff said it is probably someone’s pet.

Blue Heaven – A Key West Experience

For years my husband and I would wait to be seated at Blue Heaven for breakfast and was never blown away by the meals. However, I find that dining here for dinner is an entirely different experience. You do have to make reservations if you want to ensure a table at the time you prefer. To start, I ordered the miso eggplant salad which has become a favorite of mine. My husband opted for the caesar salad. For my main course I wanted to stay meatless and choose the macro bowl which comes filled with tasty goodness that you would never miss any meat. My husband decided on the yellowtail snapper who is not a fish fanatic. He raved about how much he enjoyed the dish and especially the sauce that accompanied it. If you want to give Blue Heaven a try, I would definitely recommend dinner. Afterall it is a Key West experience to dine at Blue Heaven.


After dinner we all walked back to the Gardens and gathered back at the gazebo. It was a nice way to end our day.


Wednesday, April 23rd – Bagatelle, Pool Day, The Salty Frog


We woke up and I saw the sun was shining once again. It was going to be another beautiful day. It was the point during our trip where a breakfast at Bagatelle was in order. After we came back from getting our coffee at Cuban Coffee Queen, we met up with Brent and Julie. 

Since the weather wasn’t too hot, we all agreed to walk down Duval to Bagatelle.

Unlike last time, the breeze was inviting and enjoyable. 


We walked up the stairs to be seated. They had several tables reserved, but the hostess was able to accommodate us and seated us on the first floor outside along the porch/balcony. Our server came over and we placed our orders. I decided to try their take on the smoked salmon bagel platter. While we were waiting for our order, there was a pesky chicken that kept poking around, waiting to get some remnants of our meal.


Once our order came out, I was pleased with the smoked salmon I ordered. I thought that how it was presented made it easier to eat. Just as we were finishing up our breakfast, that same chicken came up on our table and ran across it. Luckily it missed our plates except for poor Julie. Thankfully she was just about done, but after getting your meal trampled by a chicken, your dining experience is pretty much done. That’s Key West for you. We all got a laugh out of the ordeal.

When we were all set and ready to go, we walked back down to the Sunset Tiki Bar for a beverage. Ramsey was working again so we talked for a few while enjoying the views of the water. I checked my phone and saw that Zack Seemiller and Caffeine Carl were playing at the Salty Frog that evening. Ever since the Smokin’ Tuna closed, it has been a bit of a challenge trying to catch these guys play together. I suggested to everyone that we could go check them out that night. Everyone was on board and I also thought we would grab a bite there as well since they were scheduled to start around 6pm.

My husband and I decided to stay for another round while Brent and Julie headed back to the Gardens to relax for the rest of the day  by the pool. We told them that we would meet up with them in a few.  Once we were done with our next round, we said goodbye to Ramsey and walked back down towards Duval. 


Our initial plan was to go straight back to the Gardens, but when we walked by the entrance to the Bali Bar we figured we would just have one. We walked on in and it was quiet. There was another couple there but that was it. We ordered a couple of drinks and I went with their mango mojito. 


After chatting with the owner for a few (he told us that Cliff Cody was going to be playing there the next night), we headed back to the Gardens. When we returned, we saw Brent and Julie were relaxing by the pool. The weather was perfect to jump in the pool. We changed into our swim wear and grabbed a couple of towels. The pool was cool at first, but once I was in for a bit it was very comfortable. 


It felt so good to be able to swim in the pool again.


Eventually it was that time to freshen up for dinner. Since we didn’t have any reservations, we planned on grabbing something to eat at the Salty Frog since Carl and Zack were playing there. The food isn’t exactly gourmet, but I felt like a good fried fish sandwich and some french fries.


We were all feeling a little tired so we wound up getting an Uber to take us down to the Salty Frog. It was a quick trip and the driver dropped us off right near the entrance to the Mallory Square shops. 


We walked into the Salty Frog and found a table to sit down at. The server came over and took our drink order. While we were looking over the menu Zack came over to say hello. Then he told us that unfortunately Carl wasn’t feel well and that he wouldn’t be joining him that night. We were all disappointed but of course hoped that Carl felt better. 


Since we were already there we figured that we would stay and listen to some of Zack’s show and order something to eat. I wound up getting their fried grouper sandwich. My husband ordered a burger. Julie ordered the cheese curds for the table to start since we were being very healthy that evening.


When the cheese curds came out I was eager to try one. I have been to Minnesota a few times for work, but had never tried the cheese curds there. These on the other hand looked on the smaller side, but I did try one. To me it just reminded me of a mozzarella stick chopped up? Still tasty though.


Then our meals were served. The grouper sandwich was crispy and comparable to the one I tried at the Square Grouper. I guess if you have one fried fish grouper sandwich in Key West, they tend to taste similar. I do really enjoy the added toppings at Kaya Island Eats though. The one thing that stood out to me were the fries. Oh my the fries! They were perfectly crispy and hot. And they gave you a pile on the plate. I couldn’t finish all of them – let alone look like I put a dent in the pile.


Everyone thought the food was decent and enjoyable. When we were done we waved goodbye to Zack and headed out. I suggested that we should check out the sunset at Mallory Square since we were right there and it was just about that time


We made the short walk to Mallory Square and people were lined up getting ready to watch the sun set. 


My husband and I hadn’t been to see the sunset at Mallory Square for quite some time so it was nice to see it again. Unfortunately that time of year though, the sun sets behind Sunset Key.  


Then my husband suggested going to General Horseplay for an Old Fashion.

We left Mallory Square and walked right past the Alamo and of course the new location for the Smokin’ Tuna. 


It still didn’t look like much going on and how it is going to be an actual place with a stage, bar, tables, etc. I have no idea.


We made it to General Horseplay and walked in. The place was jamming and there was someone performing in the back. I didn’t recognize who it was so we grabbed a table inside.

My husband went to the bar to order a couple of Old Fashions for him and Brent and a couple of Murricanes for myself and Julie.


When he returned with our drinks, I tasted the Murricane and it was delicious. However, after a few more sips I realized I couldn’t or shouldn’t drink anymore. I was feeling the entire day and I was fading fast.


So once everyone done with their drinks we walked back to the Gardens and I headed straight to bed.


Thursday, April 24th – Seaside Cafe at the Southernmost Mansion, the NFL Draft, the Bali Bar


Even though I had a good night of sleep, I still woke up feeling a little sluggish. I really needed that coffee Cuban Coffee Queen. Since I slept in a bit, my husband went out and grabbed a couple cups of coffee for the both of us. When I was done with my shower and ready to start the day, there it was. It took several sips for me to start feeling like myself again. I wasn’t exactly starving that morning and neither was my husband. We wound up walking down to the pool area and talk to Lynn and Al again.


When Brent and Julie joined us we discusssed where to go for breakfast. It was just past 10am so my husband suggested waiting a little longer and we could walk down to the Seaside Cafe at the Southernmost Mansion. Everyone was onboard and the idea of sitting by the water made me smile and making me feel so much better.

Since we were not in a hurry, we walked down Simonton leisurely and then made the short cut onto to Duval. Being it was a Thursday, I started to notice the streets becoming more crowded then earlier in the week which is typical for Key West. Usually tourists come down towards the end of the week for a long weekend getaway.


We made it down to the Southernmost Mansion and it was just before 11:00am so we walked around to take a couple of pictures of the water. There was a lot of saragassum washed up on the beach but thankfully it didn’t have much of an odor.


We walked back to the Seaside Cafe and waited to be seated. 

When it was our turn, the hostess walked us to a table near the water. It was a little breezy but it felt good with the sun shining down on us. 


 To start Julie ordered the strawberry salad and then the gluten free version of the lobster pizza. I wanted to try something different and was in the mood for a tomato based sauce on the pizza.  I read on their menu that they had a four cheese and proscuitto pizza topped with arugula. My husband thought that it sounded good as well, so I ordered it for us to share. I was debating about ordering something to start, but I knew the pizza would be more then enough for me.


While we waited for our order, we talked about the up and coming NFL draft that was happening later that evening. We figured that we would go to Jack Flat’s to catch the draft and have dinner there. Soon Julie’s salad arrived along with our pizza. 

 I could not wait to dig in. The first bite tasted as good as it looked. I was so glad we came back and had an early lunch if you will instead of breakfast. We all enjoyed the pizza and headed back towards the Gardens.

Seaside Cafe at the Southernmost Mansion – Tasty Pizza by the Water

My husband and I have only been here a couple of times, but it had been a couple of years so we wanted to check it out again. We have enjoyed their signature lobster pizza in the past, but this time I wanted to try the Four Cheese & Prosciutto pizza which consisted of a red sauce, mozzarella, parmesan, gorgonzola, fontina, prosciutto and arugula. The pizza arrived and it was delicious. I loved the little bit of charr on the crust. The tomato sauce was very flavorful without being to bitter or sweet. If you want a great pizza with a  few of the water, check out the Seaside Cafe.

We walked back down to Duval towards the Gardens. When we reached Angela St. Brent and Julie headed back to their room to relax for a bit. My husband and I decided to keep walking down Duval. As we walked by the Tree Bar, we saw Teri behind the bar. We hadn’t stopped in yet to see her, so we walked on over. There were only a handful of people there, so it was easy to find a couple of vacant seats.


We sat down and ordered a couple of titos and fresh squeezed orange juice. I always love the fresh squeezed orange juice there. It is so refreshing. 


We talked to Teri for a little bit before making our next move. First we wanted to check out the Smokin’ Tuna location again and as we walked by it appeared that they were actually working on the property.

Then we neared the Alamo and thought should we try it again? 


We walked in and the place was fairly empty. When we walked over to the bar, there was a guy playing on the stage. We ordered a couple of beers and looked around. It still looks like the Tuna, but obviously new signage up everywhere. I had to make a pit stop so I walked into the restrooms. They even redid the ladies room as well. Basically just repainted the stalls and whatnot. At least there is a soap dispenser and paper towel rack on the same side of the sink. 


I walked back out and we finished our beers. Unfortunately the guy on the stage wasn’t really playing our type of music, but I get that he was trying. We paid our tab and moved on to our next stop. As we walked back onto Duval, we neared Caroline St. I thought what about First Flight for one. 


I felt like another beer and I always enjoy the atmosphere there. So we walked on in to First Flight and there were a few gentlemen sittingat the bar. We grabbed a couple of seats and I ordered their amber ale. My husband opted for one of their IPA’s. 


The bartender served us our beer and it tasted so good. However, while we were trying to talk, the one guy at the bar could not stop coughing. It was a bit disturbing and we felt uncomfortable so we walked over to the railing where there were a couple of stools. Actually it wound up being a blessing in disguise because it was nice to sit down and watch the occasional trolley or conch train go by (and be silly and wave at the tourists)

We finished our beer and figured that we should go back to the Gardens and hang out by the pool for a bit. As we walked down Duval we neared Willie T’s. I could hear Zack’s voice singing and suggested to my husband to stop in to catch a few songs. It was really crowded but he agreed and we walked in. Somehow we managed to find a couple of seats near the bar. 


Unfortunately it just wasn’t the most comfortable spot to sit. People standing in front of us waiting to order a drink and talking right next to us. Eventually my husband was able to order a couple of beers for us, but again it was packed. We finished our beers pretty quickly and wound up leaving after a few songs. All well, we tried.


Back at the Gardens, we met up with Brent and Julie. Lynn and Al were there as well. We pulled up a couple of chairs near the pool bar and relaxed for a bit. It was a beautiful afternoon. While we were talking we saw a familiar face show up. It was David who used to work at the Gardens! It was so nice to see him.


The afternoon seemed to fly by and soon it was time to freshen up before walking on over to Jack Flat’s to catch the NFL draft. The NY Giants were selecting 3rd in the draft and we were hoping that they would not take Sanders. Ironicaly Brent’s team the Titans, were picking 1st so we were all invested in watching the draft.


We walked in Jack Flat’s and it was already crowded which we expected. The hostess was however able to seat us in a booth that overlooked the tv screens so it was perfect. Our server came over and we ordered something to drink. I wound up getting a margarita. My husband also asked her for a box so we could hear one of the tvs.

It worked but it was a bit difficult to hear with all of the crowd noise. We decided to first order our appetizers. My husband ordered a caesar salad and so did Brent and Julie. I was going to pass and just stick with my order of, yes you guessed it, a fried grouper sandwich. That seemed to be my theme this trip. My husband ordered the meat loaf and Julie ordered the fish and chips. I think Brent ordered a burger if I remember correctly.


We sat for a bit before getting our appetizers. While we waited I walked on outside with Julie to check the streets. I knew the Conch Celebration Days were still in full force and the World’s Longest Parade was starting down Duval. We watched a few of the floats and people walk by before heading back in to our booth.


The appetizers were served and the draft was about to start. It wasn’t a big shock who the Titans took, but when the Giants were on the board and we waited. And then with a huge sigh of relief they took Abdul Carter. My husband and I were pretty excited. 


As we sat there we noticed that we still didn’t get our food and it was about 45 minutes or so. Julie and I headed back out to watch part of the parade again. As we were standing there we noticed to our side, our server was outside watching the parade!

Okay that would explain the delay in our food. When we walked back inside we told Brent and my husband. My husband then went up and found the manager and asked him about our order. The manager came over to our booth and apologized. Within minutes somehow our food arrived. He also gave us a free round of drinks which was nice. Everything was tasty even though it was served a lot later then what we hoped for.

After we finished our meals we headed back out onto Duval. I remembered that Cliff Cody was playing at the Bali Bar that night so we walked down to the bar.

When we walked in, it was quite busy compared to when we would stop in during the day. The place was packed with people but somehow we found a table on the other side of the bar. I noticed there was a line of people waiting to use the restroom already. Note to self, there is only one restroom at the Bali Bar, so ideally use a restroom before going if they have someone playing that night. Luckily we were all fine in that department.

My husband went to the bar and ordered us a round. At that point I could only drink water, so I asked my husband to get me a glass of water. We listened to Cliff Cody for a bit and then his girlfriend Elizabeth came over to say hello to Julie. When Cliff’s set was done, we were all getting tired so we left and walked back to the Gardens.

We met back up with Lynn and Al at the gazebo and talked about our day before turning in.


Friday, April 25th – Trying to Get the Most Out of Our Last Full Day


We wound up sleeping in a little extra that morning. I think the trip was starting to catch up to me. Well it was officially our last full day in Key West. Like every other trip, it goes by too fast. We freshened up as usual and made the quick walk to Cuban Coffee Queen. When we got back to the Gardens we heard from Julie. They decided that they were going to grab some breakfast at the Gardens that morning.


Then my husband suggested Mac’s Place. I had mentioned it earlier in the week, but we never made it over. It is located in New Town, so a walk would be quite far. It is doable, but neither of us were in the mood for a long walk. So I plugged in the coordinates for an Uber. Within minutes the vehicle was parked outside of the Gardens Hotel on Angela St. We hopped and soon we were on our way to Mac’s Place. 


When our Uber dropped us off, I saw an older couple walking in. They were the only other patrons at the place. We walked in through the bar and the guy behind bar told us we can sit where ever we wanted to. 


Like the couple before us, we chose a couple of seats outside. It was pretty cool how it was located right along the dock. You could see all the tiki hut boats parked along it. And then to one side you were right near the highway. We didn’t mind though because you could still hear the seagulls and feel the sea breeze.


Our server came out and took our drink order as we looked over the menu. They had huervos rancheros which I almost ordered but I chickened out. We both wound up ordering the classic egg breakfast. I had a side of sausage while my husband had a side of bacon. 


While we waited for our breakfast, a few more people walked in. The place was smaller then I thought it would be, but it was cute. You could see where they would have live music on the one end of the place. I am sure it does get pretty packed during the night time.


Our breakfast arrived and I was quite hungry at that point. I noticed they had a couple of local hot sauces on the table called “Bones Guy”. I tried a couple of them and they were really good. (I actually wound up ordering a bunch online when I got home.) The eggs were cooked perfectly and served nice and hot. 


We finished our meals and asked for the check. We could have stayed for another beverage but thought that we should head back to the Gardens. Again I plugged in the coordinates for an Uber to pick us up. This time it was a little longer waiting for one, but not too bad.

Soon the Uber showed up and we made it back to the Gardens. When we got back to the Gardens we both felt like did that just happen? It was just so quick. I would definitely go back there for breakfast. Next time I would like to have Brent and Julie join us.

When we returned to the Gardens, Brent and Julie were relaxing by the pool. They said that they were going to take it easy that day. Knowing it was our last full day in Key West, my husband and I wanted to check out a few more places. We told them we would meet up with them later. 


This time we walked down Simonton towards Front St. Our first stop of the day was of course the Sunset Tiki Bar at the Galleon.

Our motto for the day was to have one drink and then move on to the next place.


So after our one drink at the Tiki Bar, we headed back out towards the Bight. We wound up walking through the old White Tarpon / Walhburger’s location and saw that they built a beautiful new bar for part of the Alonzo’s Patio Bar.


Then we made it past the Conch Farm. I ran in quickly to check out their gift shop, but didn’t see anything that caught my eye.


Next we made it towards Shrimp Boat Records Recording Studio Building. I could believe how many more stickers are now on Jimmy Buffett’s old recording studio. Ever since we watched the AppleTV series Bad Monkey with Vince Vaughn, I wanted to go back to the Half Shell Raw Bar.

We had not been there in a while and we were close by, so we walked down past Schooner’s Wharf and the Boat House. 


We walked in and it was quite busy. Maybe the show made the place more popular. Unfortunatelly our favorite seats at the end of the bar were occupied, so we had to find a couple of seats on the side. 


We sat down and ordered a couple of beers. While my husband looked over the menu I took a peak at the merchandise displayed right behind me. Most of the shirts were the same designs that we already have, but then I saw a couple of new ones. I wound up buying a tank top for myself and a dri-fit red short-sleeved shirt for my husband.

When I got back to my seat, my husband told me he ordered a half dozen of oysters. I was still digesting my breakfast from earlier so I couldn’t even think about eating them. I do enjoy oysters, but I have to be in the mood to eat them.

The bartender brought out the oysters and boy they did look good. It didn’t take my husband long to finish the plate. He did ask me several times if I wanted one but I just couldn’t do it.


Our next stop on our one and move on to the next motto, was the Surley Siren Saloon. (The old Roof Top Cafe location). We walked up the stairs and I could hear live music.

When we entered the place, there were several people at the bar. I went ahead and ordered one of their margaritas that was on the menu. It had some sort of spice to it. Tasty but I couldn’t have more then one. Talk about heartburn. The live music was quite good. I wish I knew the name of the guy playing guitar.


I was starting to feel the margarita, so when we finished our drinks and we headed back to the Gardens where we met back up with the group, Brent, Julie, Lynn and Al. Lynn and Al were also leaving the next day like us. Brent and Julie weren’t leaving until the day after. 


We had no idea where to go for dinner that night. Lynn and Al already had dinner reservations. Then I suggested Kaya Island Eats. It was an easy sell and Brent and Julie were on board. My husband and I went back to our room to pack up our things so we didn’t have to do it, in the morning. We had a couple bags of laundry that arrived the day before so it made packing up our things easier.

Feeling like we accomplished something, we walked back out onto our porch. Brent and Julie were also out and about. 

While we were talking, we noticed that there were people down below in the gardens. Looking closer we realized it was a wedding. I had never seen a wedding at the Gardens before. It was so pretty to see and watch.

I tried to get a picture from our balcony but it didn’t really come out.


Everyone was getting hungry so we headed back out towards Duval. Kaya is so close to the Gardens that you are there within minutes. We walked on in and grabbed a few seats at the bar. To keep the same trend going, again I ordered the fried grouper sandwich. My husband was going to go with the rasta pasta again, but this time he got a burger. To start we shared the buffalo cauliflower. When we ordered the tuna poke last time, it was just too much food. 

First our buffalo cauliflower was served. It amazes me how good they are and it is just cauliflower.


Then my fried grouper sandwhich arrived. I think out of all the fish sandwiches I had, I like Kaya’s the best, but the french fries at the Salty Frog are even better – so crispy.



Since we were traveling the next day, we figured the best thing to do after dinner would be to go back to the Gardens. In the past we used to stay out late at the Smokin’ Tuna, but now with that in flux, it forced us to be good and get back early enough for a decent night sleep.


Saturday, April 26th – Heading Home


Our flight wasn’t until 2:00pm that day so there was no need to get up early. We slept in a little and eventually freshend up and packed the rest of our things. Check out wasn’t until 11am so we left our luggage in our room. We met up with Brent and Julie and thought about where to eat. I was feeling a little off and needed coffee, so my husband and I walked to the Cuban Coffee Queen. When we got there, the line was a line. It was so long and I almost told my husband forget it, but we decided to wait it out. On the line, we noticed that there were a number of people wearing their military uniforms. It looked like they just got in and were from South Carolina. I always find it so cool to see people in uniform.


It seemed like eternity but finally we were next in line. My husband ordered the two cuban americans. Since we didn’t have any food to accompany our order, we didn’t wait long for the coffee.  I took a sip and it was just what I needed. When we got back to the Gardens we decided to eat there that morning. 


It was perfect because they had pancakes or eggs to order. My husband and Julie ordered the pancakes, while Brent and I ordered a scrambled eggs.


Our order didn’t take long and it was perfect. I always forget that we have that option for breakfast. I normally like to go out for breakfast so we don’t take advantage of the free breakfast included. We should though – save some money.


After our last meal, we went back to our room to grab our things. Brent and Julie waited with us before it was time to go. Lynn and Al also were on their way out but their flight was a little bit earlier then ours, so they headed out before us.


When it was time for us to go, we said our goodbyes, but knew we would be seeing Brent and Julie again in Nashville in less then two weeks. I plugged in the coordinates for the Uber that showed up within minutes. We made it to the airport quickly.

Once we walked inside the airport, it still looked the same where you check bags and wait on the TSA line. Speaking of the TSA line, it was barely existent so we figured that we had time to have a drink at the Conch Flyer.


When we walked in we noticed all these piles of boxes behind the bar. The bartender told us that it was the last day. The Conch Flyer was closing down. 


Wow we were there for it’s last day. We felt kind of sad. She told us that the staff will be working now at the Chili’s in the new terminal. 


It was getting closer to our flight, so we paid our tab and went through TSA. The line was still short so we breezed right through. We were guided past where we would usually go down the escalators towards the gate(s). Then we walked through a few doors and into the new terminal. I saw the Chili’s restaurant but it wasn’t opening until the next day, figures. They did though have a make shift stand if you wanted to order something to eat and a drink.


We were walking towards our gate, but then saw Lynn and Al waiting for their flight. We sat down with them for a few. We still couldn’t get over the new terminal. There was finally room and places to sit. It made the departure experience so much more enjoyable. There was no outdoor area unfortunately though.

It was nearing our departure time, so we said goodbye to Lynn and Al and walked down to our gate. Of course it was the last one down the terminal because we were flying United.

Luckily it was before all the chaos at Newark airport, so our flight left on time. The flight was uneventful and soon we were back home with our kitty Kobe waiting for us.

Once again, we had an amazing time in Key West. We still miss the Smokin’ Tuna—it just isn’t the same without it—but we’re hopeful it’ll be back soon, bringing together all our favorite musicians once more. Still, what truly brings us back year after year are the friendships we’ve made along the way. Seeing those familiar faces and sharing memories is what makes Key West so special. It’s more than a destination—it’s my happy place.

Arctic Blast in Key West – January 19-25, 2025


For the past several years my husband and I have been visiting Key West in January. It gives us a nice break during the long winter season. Sometimes it can be on the cooler side which is to be expected, but usually you get a few nice warm days in between. This time however, we were about to experience the coldest weather for us while visiting Key West ever.


A couple of weeks leading up to our return trip to Key West (making it our 34th time, but who’s counting besides me) I saw some weather reports that an arctic blast was going to affect most of the US. I thought to myself what timing. Last year when we visited Key West during the 2nd week in January, it was cool for the first few days and then it warmed up. Then the 3rd week was perfect after we left. That is why I thought maybe waiting until the 3rd week in January we would have a better chance of hitting Key West during a warm spell. Unfortunately, the forecast was looking quite grim. I waited until the day before we were leaving to pack our things. With the weather turning cold during our visit, I tried to pack accordingly. 


Sunday, January 19 – Arrival Day


Our flight was somewhat earlier then normal – scheduled for takeoff at 9:15am. So I had arranged our car service to pick us up at 6am. Normally I like to give a little bit more time, but due to the fact it was a Sunday morning I figured that the traffic wouldn’t be so bad at that hour. Snow was in the forecast, but luckily it wasn’t supposed to start until later on in the afternoon. 


I set my alarm for 4:45 am, but I didn’t need it. I woke up just before the alarm went off and freshened up. Then I woke up my husband so he could get ready. This was our second trip leaving our somewhat newly adopted kitty, Kobe. Last time while we were away on vacation, he hid the entire time when anyone would come by to feed him and clean his litter. I was hoping that by now he would be a little more open to make contact with whomever we had scheduled to come by. I made sure his litter was cleaned and a fresh bowl of both wet and dry food.


The car service showed up right on time and we said our goodbyes to Kobe.  The drive to Newark Liberty International Airport was uneventful arriving around 7:00am. Our flight was leaving out of Terminal A, giving us the opportunity to try Clear. We have used it in the past, but only in Terminal C. Surprisingly, there was a decent line for Clear. I assume everyone now is catching on that by signing up for TSA Pre or Clear, or both (like us) expedites the TSA screen process.

Eventually we made it through security and we still had to time to head up to the United Club lounge for a bite to eat and something to drink. 

I looked at my phone and the weather looked promising for when we arrive in Key West, but then Monday looked like it was going to take a turn with rain and cold temperatures in the forecast. At least we were going to miss the snow I thought to myself.

Soon it was that time to grab our things and walk down to our gate. Once everyone boarded, the captain came on to the intercom and explained to us that we were going to be delayed due to some of paperwork. I thought really? Thankfully, it wound up not being too much of an issue. After about 20 minutes (give or take) we started to pull away from the gate. The captain came back on and told us that we would make up the time in the air and should arrive as scheduled.


After a couple of hours I started to see the water below and eventually the Keys. The excitement started to build as we neared Key West. I am always excited to return to my happy place especially that we were also joining our good friends Brent and Julie once again along with Lynn and Alan. 

The plane touched down just before 1pm and I noticed the progression of the airport construction. It was 6 months since the last time we visited Key West. At first I thought that maybe we would actually be able to go in to the new section of the airport, but then I saw the outdoor walkway being moved toward the exit door. I did hear that possibly by April that the airport would be completed to the point that it would be able to accept arrivals in the new terminal building. I think it is that the much needed airport expansion is a no brainer due to all the flights that come and go now into Key West, but I know I will miss that feeling of when you stop off the plane and walk the tarmac to the baggage claim area. 

As soon as we departed the plane, I could immediately feel the warm air and humidity. It was a beautiful day as the sun was shining above. We made the long walk around all of the construction to the baggage claim area. Like usual, we only had carry-on so we bypassed the baggage clain carousel and walked back out through the doors to catch a taxi. No one else was waiting, so we were told to go to the first taxi waiting in line. My husband told him that we were going to the Gardens Hotel (where else would it be?).

Like the previous 30+ times visiting Key West, we were returning to the Gardens Hotel. The only reason I can remember how many times we have stayed there, is due to my previous trip reports on my blog, otherwise I couldn’t keep track anymore – honestly. My husband and I just adore the Gardens Hotel. It always feels like we are returning home if you will. We truly love the place and can’t say enough how much we both look forward staying there each and every visit.

The drive from the airport to Old Town always makes me happy. I love seeing the water along A1A which I just saw on Google Maps has changed to “Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway”? I thought that was pretty amazing. I texted our friend Julie that we were on our way. It wasn’t too long before I could see the usual yellow cement wall that encompasses the Gardens Hotel property. 

Our taxi driver pulled up to the entrance and we grabbed our luggage. We walked up the stairs into the main building to check in.

No one was in the room, but once we sat down the receptionist Rhoda appeared through the door. She welcomed us back and checked us in within minutes, since we know the lay of the land by now. Our room was ready and she handed us our keys. We thanked her and wheeled our luggage back out to the pool area where Brent and Julie were waiting for us.

We gave each other big hugs and grabbed a couple of seats at the bar. I knew we had to unpack but just one beer I thought to myself before we go ahead and get settled in. Portia was behind the bar who also welcomed us back with hugs. After a few photos capturing our reunion we enjoyed a cold beverage. I didn’t want to move at that point, but both my husband and I took our luggage to our room to unpack our things. When we opened the door to our room, I saw a couple bottles of liquor left from previous guests who happened to be friends of ours. I thought that was so nice of them. 


It didn’t take us too much time to unpack our things and replace our socks and sneakers with flip flops (I always love that feeling). We headed back to the pool bar area where we saw the other bartender Phil. My husband and I went ahead and ordered another round and then our other friends Lynn and Al arrived. Their flight landed about an hour after ours. All of a sudden it was a reunion celebration of all sorts.

We spent the afternoon catching up while enjoying the wonderful weather. 

Then I noticed that the staff was moving tables around. I totally forgot that it there was jazz that evening. (The last time we were there in July, there wasn’t any jazz on Sundays since they take a break during the summer months.)

We wound up grabbing our things and moved over to the gazebo that overlooks the pool. It was the perfect vantage point to enjoy jazz and watch all the people arriving. 

All of us were starting to get hungry. Plus some of us wanted to catch some of the NFL playoffs (like me). Everyone agreed to go to Kaya since it is both conveniently located in close proximity to the Gardens and they have many TV screens to watch live sports. It’s a win win. When we walked down Angela St. on to Duval, I noticed there was more of a breeze then when we first arrived at the Gardens. 

We walked in and the place was packed. There wasn’t an empty table within sight. We walked past the bar into another room where there was a second bar and additional tables. The manager of Kaya approached us and asked us how many people were in our party. My husband told him that there was six of us and we could sit wherever he could fit us. Within minutes he had his staff pulling together a couple of tables and we were seated. I couldn’t believe how quickly they were able to accommodate us.

Once we sat down, I had to order one of their signature mai tai’s. While everyone was looking over the menus I checked the tv screens and saw that the Bills and Ravens were tied. Normally at home, my husband and I would be glued to the tv watching football, but we were back in Key West enjoying a fun night. 

My husband and I went ahead and shared the ahi tuna nachos which I always enjoy. He also went with an old reliable dish that we both tend to order, the rasta pasta with chicken as his choice of protein. I felt like a fish sandwich with fries. So I ordered the fried mahi mahi sandwich. Even though the place was packed with both tourists and football fanatics alike, we didn’t wait too long for our first courses to be served. The nachos were delicious. I only wished that we each ordered our own. Then our main courses arrived and I couldn’t have been happier. The grouper was both delicious and crispy. My husband enjoyed his rasta pasta (which was now served with a spiral pasta instead of the regular linguine/spaghetti noodles). He loved it nevertheless. In fact everyone enjoyed their meals.

After dinner we made the short walk back to the Gardens. Jazz was over so we had the place to ourselves. We all went back to the gazebo to enjoy a nightcap. While we were sitting there, you could feel the temperature dropping and the wind picking up. I thought to myself that is it for the warm weather. I was hoping I was wrong, but unfortunately I was right. 


Monday, January 20 – Cold Front Moves In – Azur, Hogs Breath, The Square Grouper

I checked (again) the weather right before turning in and I saw that the cold front would be moving in by the morning. Knowing that bit of info, there was no reason to get up early, so sleeping in was the plan. I eventually woke up and noticed there was no sun shining through the windows. I opened our door and it was so cold and raining. It was such a deflating feeling. Havine breakfast at La Te Da like we usually do our first morning in Key West, was definitely out of the equation. After I took a quick shower, my husband followed suite and we met up with Brent and Julie outside. I suggested going to Azur for breakfast since their service tends to be on the slower side and we were in no hurry that morning.

I was craving Cuban Coffee Queen first, so my husband and I grabbed a couple of umbrellas at the Gardens and told Brent and Julie we would meet them back in a few. We made the short walk across Angela St. towards Cuban Coffee Queen through the back of the Firehouse parking lot. When we neared the small lane to Cuban Coffee Queen, my husband almost bumped into a tall gentlemen wearing a suit. He said excuse me, and then we realized it was a friend of ours Kokomo Joe. He was in town on business for a few days. We hugged hello and he walked with us in to Cuban Coffee Queen (where he was just coming from). While we waited on line, we chatted for a few. (Joe used to live in Key West several years ago. We met him a while back at the Galleon Sunset Tiki Bar. Then throughout our visits to Key West, we would meet up for coffee at Cuban Coffee Queen in the mornings.) He told us he was only in town until the next morning, but he asked us if we were going to see Zack Seemiller later that afternoon at the Hogs Breath. We told him we would probably head over there around 1pm. We made tentative plans to meet up later and then he was on his way.

With our Cuban American Coffees in hand, we walked back to the Gardens to grab an Uber to take with Brent and Julie over to Azur. We also ran into Lynn and Al who were enjoying the breakfast at the Gardens out of the rain. The Gardens has a wonderful breakfast, but I enjoy going out for breakfast since we tend to skip lunch. 

I went on the Uber app and plugged in our coordinates. Within minutes our Uber showed up and we piled in. The rain had subsided a bit, but no one felt like walking – plus it was cold. We arrived at Azur and walked in. It was fairly quiet and we were seated at a nice table inside.

To start my husband I ordered a couple of screwdrivers, while Brent and Julie ordered a couple of mimosas. The weather wasn’t what I had hoped for, but we were still in my happy place with great friends. 

There are so many things on the menu to choose from at Azur that it was so hard to decide what to order. I finally chose one of their frittatas. I picked the four cheese and egg white frittata with fresh avocado. My husband went with the traditional breakfast route – two eggs over medium and bacon. Brent ordered an omelet, while Julie ordered the granola and yogurt with fresh berries.

While we were waiting for our orders, we talked about our plans for the day. I mentioned that I wanted to see Zack that afternoon at Hogs Breath, but besides that, everything was up in the air. Brent and Julie decided that they were going to go back to the Gardens after breakfast and then meet up with us later on. 

Our breakfast arrived and it was tasty. I really enjoyed the avocado on top of the frittata. I noticed that for Julie’s order, they served the yogurt, berries and granola separately with a bowl. This way you can add as much as you want. I thought that was a pretty clever way to serve it. (Note to self, if I am in the mood for that order it next time.)

Once we were done, we all wound up walking back to the Gardens to regroup before heading back out for the day. The rain had stopped for the moment so the timing was perfect. Right before we were going to make our move, we ran into Lynn and Al again. We told them that we were going to walk around and then head on over to Hogs Breath. They were going to walk around as well and mentioned that they would see us later.

Even though it wasn’t a great day weather wise, I wanted to go to the Galleon Tiki Bar to see the water. We hadn’t walked down Duval yet so it was time to do so. The streets weren’t very busy and then I realized it was a holiday – MLK day.  At least we didn’t have to dodge a lot of slow people walking in front of us which tends to happen, but we do like to walk at a quick pace. 

First we wanted to make a detour and check out the progress of the new Smokin’ Tuna location. We walked down Charles St. and made the turn and saw the lot. There wasn’t much progress besides the bar and areas of fake green grass since the last time we saw the property back in July. I did notice they transferred the name plate badges on the back wall. Maybe ours made the wall? Other then that I couldn’t see it being completed anytime soon. Honestly I don’t know how it is going to work with such a small area? 

We walked down Front St. and the water didn’t look too friendly. No one is going out on the water that’s for sure I thought to myself. We walked along the boardwalk and made it to the Sunset Tiki Bar. 

There were only a couple of people there so we were able to sit at our regular seats. The plastic tarps were down on the far end which helped block the wind. We ordered a couple of drinks from the bartender, then the owner Phil showed up as always and welcomed us back. We enjoyed a couple of beverages and conversation before moving on to our next stop.

And our next stop was Hogs Breath. I had a feeling that it was going to be crowded since no one was going out on the water. Sure enough when we walked in, there were no seats at the bar available. 

I received a text from Julie telling us that they would be on their way soon and would probably order something to eat. So instead of sitting at the bar (which there were no seats open anyway) we asked the hostess for a table. While we were about to sit down, Joe showed up. Talk about perfect timing.

We wound up sitting at a table near the bar, but not in a great view to see Zack. I gave him a wave hello as we settled at our table. 

Our server came up to our table and we ordered a round of beer. As we were talking and enjoying the music Brent and Julie showed up. We grabbed a couple of seats for them and managed to fit comfortably around the table. It was a fun afternoon hanging out and listening to the music. Joe had to head out and as he left, Lynn and Al showed up. We shifted a couple of chairs once more and stayed a bit longer.

After Zack’s set was over, we headed back to the Gardens. Once we made it back to the Gardens, we saw that Al was working behind the pool bar. He had been out of work for a while due to an accident, but luckily he was okay and back. It was good to see him and we chatted for a bit. 

We started to talk about the new Square Grouper that recently opened up in the old Off the Hook location. He told us that he did indeed tried it and said it was great. We had no dinner plans that night and thought why not give it a try? Unfortunately, they don’t take reservations so there would most likely be a wait. We didn’t mind, so we made the decision to go to the Square Grouper for dinner. Brent and Julie also wanted to try it so we grabbed an Uber to head back out.

When we arrived, there were people standing outside. My husband went in and put our name down. The hostess said that it was going to be about a 30 minute wait. Great I thought, but they offered drink service outside while you wait. How fun I thought! So while were waiting, a server came out and took our drink order.

Probably 20 minutes or so passed and then our name was called. We walked in and the place looked a bit different then when it was Off the Hook. We were seated at a table in the front room. 

To start my husband and I shared the fried calamari, while Brent and Julie ordered the fish dip. I had to try their grouper sandwich since we were at the Square Grouper after all. My husband opted for the burger while Brent and Julie ordered one of their other fish entrees. (I can’t remember exactly what they had). When our appetizers came out I was starving. The fried calamari was delicious – crispy and not greasy. I tried the fish dip that Julie ordered and it was terrific. I could have eaten the entire thing.


Even though it was crowded we didn’t wait long for our main meals to come out. My grouper sandwich hit the spot and my husband’s burger looked amazing. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed what they ordered. We would definitely come back and plus the prices are fairly reasonable as well which is always a plus in my book.

After dinner Brent and Julie headed back to the Gardens while my husband and I wanted to check out the Green Parrot. We told them that we would meet up in the morning for breakfast. When we made it to the Green Parrot it was packed. There wasn’t even a place to stand. I wasn’t sure who was playing that night but I knew that the Mile 0 festival was starting the so it could have been a band from that? I couldn’t tell.


Since the Green Parrot was off the table, we walked back down to Duval and saw that Tony Baltimore was playing at Willie T’s. It was crowded as well, but we managed to get a couple of seats at the bar. We listened to a couple of songs and then it was the end of his set. Just as well because I was getting tired. After saying our hellos to Tony we walked back to the Gardens to call it a night. 


Tuesday, January 21 – A Little Nice Weather Reprieve – La Te Da, The Bali Bar, Latitudes

When we woke up there still was no sunlight shining into our room. This time my husband beat me to the shower. After he freshened up, he checked outside and said that it didn’t feel as cold as the day before. With that bit of knowledge, I quickly hopped in the shower to get ready.

Once we were all set for the day, we met up with Brent and Julie and discussed where to eat. Since the wind had subsided Julie suggested that we could give La Te Da a try. It sounded perfect, but first my husband and I had to make the quick walk to Cuban Coffee Queen. When we returned, the weather was indeed improving. We figured that we would walk down Duval instead of using an Uber. When we made the turn onto Duval, the streets were quiet.

Probably a lot of the tourists that were down for the holiday weekend had left, but then again it was the start of the Mile 0 Festival. 

We arrived at La Te Da and there were only a handful of people sitting at the bar. Our two favorite tables that are located right behind the hostess table, were open. Julie asked the hostess if we could sit at the two tables and she nodded. When we sat down the bartender came over and handed us menus and took our drink order. I couldn’t believe that it was starting to feel warm. Then all of a sudden the sun started to peak out. When the bartender came back with our drinks we placed our breakfast order. 

While we were enjoying the breaks of sun, we noticed people walking along Duval. Some were wearing cowboy hats and whatnot. So it looked like people were arriving for the Mile 0 Festival. 

Soon our breakfast orders arrived and it was time to dig in. I wound up ordering an omelet with swiss cheese, spinach and mushrooms.

My husband ordered the eggs benedict blackstone which is his favorite. I have ordered it before with the ham being replaced by breaded and fried slices of tomato. It is quite tasty. 

We all enjoyed our meal and then it was time to walk back to the Gardens and decide what to do for the day.

As we walked down Duval you could feel the warmth of the sun. It was going to be a nice day which was welcomed after the weather we experienced the day before. 

After a quick stop at the Gardens my husband and I headed back out for the day while Brent and Julie stayed at the Gardens. 

We wanted to try a new place, but had no idea where to go. So without a plan we walked back down Duval St. While we were walking I noticed there was a sign out on the sidewalk pointing down this little alley way that read “The Bali Bar”. 

What is that I thought? I looked down and could make out what appeared to be a large bar covered by a palapa. I called to my husband and pointed at the sign. We could see that there was a light on and it looked open, so we walked down the alley way. There were two girls behind the bar that were finishing setting up. What appeared to be the manager/owner was sitting at the bar doing paperwork and welcomed us to sit down.


I went ahead and ordered a mango mojito while my husband ordered a Titos and soda. We chatted with the manager for a few who was coincidentally from New Jersey. He told us that they opened up about 3 months ago. It used to be the old Casa 325 Hotel and now it is called the Key West Hotel. They have 6 rooms in the front building on Duval and additional rooms in the building behind the bar. I took a peak and they also have a pool.

It was a cute place. 

You are just a couple steps off of Duval, but when you sit at the bar you would never guess it. The manager/owner also mentioned that they have live entertainment starting at 7pm. We thought that we should check it out later and bring Brent and Julie along.


We finished our drinks and continued to walk down Duval. I then saw that Terri was working at the Tree Bar. We grabbed a couple of empty seats at the bar and sat down. We enjoyed a couple of Titos and fresh squeezed orange just and talked for a few. 

Julie had made reservations that evening for all of us to go to Latitude’s for dinner. I didn’t think that with the weather we would go, but since the temperature wasn’t too bad and the winds had died down, we decided to give it a go. 

After the Tree Bar and walking around for a bit, we made it back to the Gardens to relax for a few and get ready for dinner. 

When it was nearing the time to catch the water taxi to Latitudes, we met back up with Brent and Julie. Instead of walking we took an Uber to the Opal resort. It was a quick drive and within minutes the Uber driver dropped us off right in front. Then we walked through the Opal Resort towards the pier to catch the water taxi.

While we were walking I noticed the winds were starting to pick back up. Luckily I did have a jacket on over my dress since I didn’t know how the weather was going to be that evening.

Not before long the water taxi showed up and we all loaded in. Even though it wasn’t the warmest weather, there were still plenty of guests headed over to Latitude’s for dinner. 

When we arrived we were seated at a table outside which I was a little concerned about. The server went ahead and lit one of the outside heaters for us since it was getting a bit chilly. As usual Latitude’s doesn’t offer any specials, which is fine, but we have been fortunate enough to dine there quite often and would be open for them to change up the menu a little.

However the one thing I always saw on the menu was the lobster bisque. I would think to myself who orders soup in Key West? Well that evening was the perfect time to do so. Both my husband and I went ahead and ordered the soup with a shot of sherry on the side, which one of the bartender’s at the Gardens Hotel recommended. For my main meal I wound up going with the seared grouper and my husband went with the Key West pink shrimp carbonara. Brent and Julie ordered a couple of salads and the crispy salmon as their main entrees.

I could not wait for the soup to arrive to warm me up. While we were waiting, I walked out to one of the empty tables in the sand. I was hoping that my husband and I could get a picture together as the sun was starting to set.  

One of the servers offered to take our photo and wound up taking a lot of pictures. It was very kind of him and we did manage to get a couple of keepers.

When we walked back to our table our soup was served. It was delicious – especially with the shot of sherry poured over. The soup was full of lobster flavor and warmed me right up. Then our main meals arrived. My grouper was good, but it didn’t blow me away. I went ahead and tasted the carbonara my husband ordered and it was amazing. I should have ordered that instead. 

As the sun fell behind the clouds, all of the holiday lights that were still on display at Latitudes came on.

It was so magical and beautiful that it made me so happy that we did go to Latitude’s that evening. When we were done with our meal, we walked back down to the dock to take the water taxi back.


When we got back to the main land, my husband and I suggested to Brent and Julie that we could check out the Bali Bar. We strolled back onto Duval and down to the Bali Bar (the entrance is located right next to the Key West Women’s Club building). 

We walked in and the place more people there, then when we stumbled upon it earlier that day. A young gentlemen was playing guitar while we sat down at one of the empty tables. My husband and Brent walked on over to the bar and ordered us a round of drinks. While we were enjoying the music, the winds started to picked up even more. Here comes that arctic blast that was supposedly going to take over most of the country. Even though it was starting to get chilly it was still a fun night.

When the music ended, we trelked back down towards the Gardens. As we passed Rick’s we saw that Just George was playing. I also had to make a pit stop, so I walked in with Brent and made a beeline to the restrooms. When I came back out, Brent was talking to George and I said hello. He was mentioning to us that for the Mile 0 Festival, he and the band (Caffeine Carl) would be playing the next night at the Backyard Bar (which is located at the back of Kaya Island Eats). We told him that we would check it out.

Then we wound up walking near the Green Parrot. Since we couldn’t get in the night before I suggested that we could try again. Brent and Julie decided to go back to the Gardens so we said good night. When we walked in, the Green Parrot was packed, however I noticed there were two seats available at the bar. I couldn’t believe it. We sat down and ordered a couple of beers.

There was a great band playing most likely part of the Mile 0 Festival. 

I was getting tired so we didn’t stay too long, but long enough to enjoy a couple of tunes. We headed back to the Gardens to turn in for the night.


Wednesday, January 22 – Cold and Windy Day – Bagatelle, The Sunset Tiki Bar, The Backyard Bar

As it was nearing the time to get up, I could hear the winds ripping outside. I didn’t have a good feeling about the weather. After my husband freshened up, it was my turn. Before I did, I opened the door and couldn’t believe how cold it was. This is Key West?

I made sure to wear leggings and sneakers. There was no way I was going to walk around in shorts. My husband was braver then me as he grabbed a pair of shorts to wear. Since the weather wasn’t ideal to eat outdoors we thought about going to Bagatelle for breakfast. I felt like walking instead of taking an Uber. So after we grabbed our coffee at Cuban Coffee Queen, we met up with Brent and Julie.

It was a chilly morning no doubt. As we ventured down Duval the winds seemed to pick up. I didn’t think it would be that windy. We all noticed that the street were nearly empty. I think we were the only ones walking down Duval. 


We made it to Bagatelle and it was obviously too cold to sit outside. They did had the tarps down along the balconies to protect the outside seating area from the wind, but no one took the bait. When we were met with the hostess, we told her we would like to sit inside preferably upstairs. She escorted us up the stairs where we were seating at one of the 4-tops inside. I don’t think I had ever eaten at Bagatelle inside. 

To start we all ordered a cocktail. I remembered how I enjoyed their red sangria in the past so I went ahead and ordered a glass. Like the day before I ordered an omelet while my husband had the American classic of two over medium eggs. Brent and Julie ordered the veggie omelet. While we were waiting for our breakfast to arrive I looked at my phone. I couldn’t believe it when I saw that it said 61 degrees with real feel of 46 degrees – yes 46 degrees. It said that the 36 mph winds were making it feel colder. No wonder why there was no one walking down Duval St. except us. For some reason when it is below 70 degrees in Key West, it feels colder then it actually is. I think it may have to do with the dampness in the air being by the water.

We didn’t have to wait too long for our breakfast to be served. As usual the breakfast at Bagatelle didn’t disappoint. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered. After breakfast since we were already close to Front St. we walked down to the Galleon Sunset Tiki Bar. Brent and Julie hadn’t been there yet so we thought it would be a perfect time to check it out.

We walked down Front St. to the end where we walked onto the boardwalk. As we maneuvered down, the wind became so strong and it was extremely uncomfortable. 

Once we got the Sunset Tiki Bar at the Galleon we had some relief from the wind, because like Bagatelle, they had the tarps down and a few heaters on. 


Ramsey was working behind the bar and we said hello. She was in the process of putting together hot apple cider which I never thought I would see the day. It was tempting to order one, but I stuck to our usual cold drink of sweet tea and water. When we were done with our drinks we said goodbye to Ramsey and walked back towards Front St. At least leaving you can walk through the parking lot. No one wanted to walk the way we came in along the water. That was not fun.

Brent and Julie wanted to head back to the Gardens for the afternoon so we said we would meet up with them later.  We walked around for a bit before landing at the Surly Siren. We walked up the stairs and inside to sit at the bar. There were a couple of people already sitting at the bar so we weren’t the only ones. The bartender asked us what we wanted and I thought that a margarita sounded good. Little did I know they actually won an award for the best margarita. 

When the bartender served me the drink I could see why. It was tasty and not made with sour mix which I am not a fan of. My husband had a regular vodka and soda. While we were trying to warm back up we chatted with the owner for a bit. She was trying out other margarita recipes and gave us each a sample as she came up with a new concoction. They were all very good.

Our next stop was The Bull. We normally don’t patronize the Bull, but it looked inviting since it was indoors for the most part. We walked in and grabbed a couple of seats at the bar. The bartender behind the bar named Lou was a real hoot. The Bull is a great place to watch all the people walk along Duval. I don’t think there was one person wearing shorts that I saw. My husband was definitely second guessing his choice of apparel that day.

When we were done with our drinks we walked back down Duval towards the Gardens. I realized it was Wednesday and that Zack Seemiller would be playing at Willie T’s. I didn’t think it would be too crowded because of the weather. I mentioned it to my husband and we decided to stop in. We walked in and it was packed.   I guess everyone had the same idea as us. We walked up to the bar and my husband ordered us a couple of drinks. While we were waiting I noticed a couple of seats opened up around the bar. We waved our hellos to Zack before sitting down around the side of the bar. 

After listening to Zack for a bit we made our next move – back to the Gardens. We still weren’t exactly sure where we were going to eat that evening so figured that we could meet back up with Brent and Julie to see what they were doing. 

When we got back Brent and Julie were at the pool bar, along with Lynn and Al. We talked about how cold it was but not nearly as cold as it was back up in NJ. Since we found out that Just George and Caffeine Carl were going to be playing at the Backyard Bar that evening, it was a no brainer. We planned to go back to Kaya Island Eats for dinner. That way we could check out the Backyard Bar after dinner. 

Once everyone was ready we made the short walk down to Kaya. 

This time when we walked in, it wasn’t as nearly crowded as it was on Sunday night. Most likely since there weren’t any NFL playoff games going on.  We were seated at a similar table like last time by the bar. This time I was in the mood for the rasta pasta. They also had the buffalo cauliflower appetizer which I have had in the past that I ordered and then for my main course I went with the rasta pasta with portabello mushrooms. My husband ordered it as well, but with chicken. 

Similar to a couple of nights before, our food was served to us in a timely manner. The appetizer was tasty and so was the rasta pasta. I do prefer the regular spaghetti noodles that they used to serve with the rasta pasta verses the curly pasta.

When we were done our dinner, we headed towards the back of Kaya which lead us to the Backyard Bar.

There were a bunch of people at the bar so we opted to grab a couple of seats along the side of where the stage/dance floor area was set up. Caffeine Carl, George and the rest of the band just arrived as well as they were setting up. We walked up to them to say hello. Then I noticed back at the bar Erin was tending the bar. I made sure I ran over to her and give her a hug hello. It almost felt like the Smokin’ Tuna was sort of back. 

Not before long the band started playing and it was great to hear them again. At one point George mentioned how it was the first time that all of them are playing together since the Smokin’ Tuna closed down 9 months ago. I couldn’t believe it and how we were lucky enough to catch them during our stay in Key West.

While we were listening to the band, Lynn and Al showed up. We all wound up staying until they were done. They only played a couple of hours since there was another band after them for the Mile 0 Festival. I heard Carl mentioning that they would be back with Zack at 5:30pm the next night. I was kind of bummed because I knew Julie made dinner reservations for us at 6pm at Lola’s. 

We said goodbye to everyone and made it back to the Garden’s. When we got back to our room we had a little visitor, Lucy, the Garden’s Hotel resident kitty. She was quite cold (like us) so we let her in our room to warm up. She wound up sleeping with us (well right at my husband’s feet) all night. Eventually around 6:00am she woke us up meowing to go outside (assuming she probably had to use the restroom). 


Thursday, January 23 – Another Cold Day – Breakfast Club Too, Back to the Bali Bar, Lola’s

We woke up to another cloudy and cold day. This time my husband made sure to wear pants instead of shorts for the day. After we freshened up we joined Brent and Julie by the coffee station at the Gardens. Lynn and Al were also at one of the tables enjoying the Gardens breakfast. The Gardens offers a great breakfast for all guests, but as I mentioned prior we like to eat out for breakfast since we tend to pass on lunch. 

The breakfast place of choice that we all settled upon was Breakfast Club Too. Since it was another cold morning, we opted for an Uber (especially after our experience walking down Duval the other day in the wind to Bagatelle). As usual with Uber in Key West as soon as I hit send on the app, the driver was in front of the Gardens Hotel within minutes. We all hopped in and soon we were on our way to the Breakfast Club Too. 

We must have hit it right because when we arrived there wasn’t a wait. The hostess seated us at a table along the wall. I knew ahead of time I was going to order their grits served with melty cheese on top. I love their grits. Our server came over and took our drink order. When she came back, I ordered a couple of eggs over medium with grits instead of the usual breakfast potatoes. My husband ordered eggs benedict. Last time we were there he ordered the croque madame and it was enormous. Generally speaking, the portions at Breakfast Club Too are quite generous for the most part.

When our breakfast was served, I could not wait to dig in to the grits. They were just as I remembered – cheesy and delicious. Brent and Julie wound up sharing an omelet order and a side of grits. My husband enjoyed his eggs benedict. Once everyone was done, we headed back on to Front St. As we were exciting the restaurant, we noticed there were many people outside waiting to be seated. I guess we timed that right.

Since we were right near the Bight, there was no hesitation where to go next – yes the Sunset Tiki Bar at the Galleon. 

We walked along the water once again. It was still chilly, but not nearly as windy as it was the day before. As we were walking closer to the Tiki Bar, the skies started to reveal some shades of blue. I started to get excited about the potential of it becoming a beautiful day.

We walked in and grabbed a couple of seats next to one of the heaters they had on. While waiting for our drinks, I went back out to the boardwalk to take a couple of pictures capturing the blue sky and sun, since we had not seen much of it for the past couple of days. 

While we were enjoying our drinks,  Julie reminded us that we had dinner reservations that evening at 6pm. I was excited to go, but at the same time I wanted to catch Zack with Caffeine Carl at the Backyard bar, but with them playing from 5-7pm I knew it was out of the question. Well hopefully we could catch them the next night for our last night in Key West.

After we finished our drinks, we made it back out on to Front St. Brent and Julie decided to head back to the Gardens. They wound up walking down Simonton, while we wound up heading down towards Captain Tony’s. We checked to see if Gabriel Wright was playing, but no such luck. (So bummed that he and his wife Kim are moving to St. Martin, but wish them the best of luck.) Anyway, then we saw the little alley way, Telegraph Lane which takes you to the the entrance to the Alamo (the old Smokin’ Tuna). Do we dare check it out? Hmmmm… why not we thought. 

We walked in and it felt so strange to see all the Smokin’ Tuna branding replaced with the Alamo signs. There were several people there and it appeared to be a band (most likely for the Mile 0 festival) setting up on the stage. We sat down at the bar and saw a food menu on the bar, but no drinks. I wasn’t sure what to order when the bartender asked us. Neither was my husband. While we were trying to decide, the bartender told us he would be right back. We both looked at each and said we don’t feel right here, so we bolted out of there. 

We just couldn’t sit there and enjoy ourselves knowing what happened and plus being such huge supporters of the Smokin’ Tuna we didn’t feel right. So we walked back down Charles St. on to Duval.

Then we saw the sign again for the Bali Bar. My husband and I both looked at each other and thought why not?

As we sat down, I felt the temperature start to drop again and the sun retreating. So much for a beautiful day I thought. We ordered a couple of drinks and chatted with the bartenders and a couple of people that were sitting at the bar for a little bit. However, I couldn’t help watching all the news coverage about the cold and snow the south was experience. At least we didn’t have snow in Key West.

Our next course of action was to get back on to Duval and stop in and see Zack again at Willie T’s. We walked in and again the place was crowded. It wasn’t as bad as the other day, but I was still surprised being it is an outdoor place, but somehow it does tend to block the wind – well close to the bar.  

We found a couple seats by the bar where we ordered a couple drinks. I wanted to have some time to relax and freshen up for Lola’s so we didn’t stay too long. We said our goodbyes and walked down to the liquor store located just a few steps down Duval after Angela St. 

I was in charge to pick both a red and white bottle of wine. They did have a good selection of wine to choose from and after perusing the bottles, I found the perfect bottles (or at least that’s what I thought).

We made it back to the Gardens where we ran into Kate, the owner. It was nice to see her as always and we talked for a little bit. And of course say hello to her little dog, Tiny. 


I was getting cold again so changing into a dress was out of the question. So I wound up leaving on what I was wearing for Lola’s (including an insulated jacket and Carhart beanie). When Brent and Julie were ready, we grabbed our bottles of wine that we brought to our room and made the short and convenient walk down Simonton to Lola’s.


I couldn’t believe that there weren’t anyone standing outside, but then we realized we were a few minutes late. It was just after 6pm but it wasn’t a problem. We walked in and we were seated in the front row. Well the front row to watch the chef cook up all his wonderful dishes. I even notieced he had the amuse bouche all ready to go for the first course to all the tables. 

We opened our wine while we waited for the server to tell us what was on the menu for the evening. She rattle off the typical seared scallop appetizer that they are known for, then lamp chops and also their braised artichokes which I have ordered in the past. Then she mentioned several fish options (which would be served over ravoli which I thought was an unusual pairing) for the main dishes as well as filet mignon. 


For some reason the lamb chops sounded good for my first course followed by the salmon. (I normally don’t eat red meat, but once in a while I will make an exception – especially for rack of lamb.) I knew that I can get salmon all the time at home here in NJ, but I was in the mood for it. My husband ordered the seared scallops to start and then of course the filet mignon. Brent and Julie also started with the seared scallops and the filet of pompano I believe. 

When our first courses came out I was second guessing my choice for an appetizer. While the lamb chops looked amazing, the portion was enough for my main meal. I was quite hungry so I powered through them. They were cooked perfectly. As we were enjoying our appetizers my husband poured a glass of the red wine that I picked out. We each took a taste and realized it had a sparkling quality to it – like someone poured club soda in it. Not exactly what we were looking for. It tasted fine, but the bubbles were a bit odd – and it wasn’t sparkling wine. Then we tried the bottle of white wine I picked out. It was so acidic and not to our liking. Thankfully Brent and Julie had a nice bottle of red we were able to enjoy.

There’s usually a bit of a wait between appetizers and the main courses due to the chef cooking for everyone. It was fine to relax and digest our first course. I was looking at the time and it was almost 7pm and I knew that Caffeine Carl and Zack Seemiller were only playing until 7:30pm at the Backyard Bar. Definitely not going to make it. 

Then I checked my phone and saw that the Marshal Morlock Band was playing at General Horseplay that night at 9pm and I always wanted to see them, especially after hearing my company who I work for sponsored them when they were playing at a trade show in Vegas last year. Well that could be an option I thought to myself.

Eventually our main courses were served and I still had some room to dig in. The salmon was delicious and tender. I wasn’t really a fan however, of the ravioli underneath it. I thought it really didn’t pair well. My husband’s filet mignon looked wonderful. It was served over couscous. Again an odd pairing I thought, but he said the filet was delicious. I took a small sample and he was right. Brent and Julie enjoyed their main courses as well.

When we were finished we walked back to the Gardens. Brent and Julie decided to stay behind while my husband and I headed out for the evening. Plus it was a good. excuse to walk off some of the food we just ingested. I looked at the time and it was a little before 8pm. It was too early to go to General Horseplay, so we walked down Duval and back to the Surley Siren. When we walked in there wasn’t any entertainment going on, but there were a few people at the bar. The bartender behind the bar ironically was from Minnesota (the company I work for is based in Minnesota and ironically have to go to this spring). It was nice to pop in for a drink and try to warm up after the walk down Duval and to Whitehead St. . 

Then it was just about 9pm so we finished our beverages and walked down to General Horseplay. Along the way we passed the sad looking new Smokin’ Tuna lot. I really hope they can pull it off, but then again if not the Backyard Bar seems like the perfect replacement? I am not sure about all the logistics regarding the Smokin’ Tuna musicians and the Backyard Bar but it seems like a no brainer to me never the less.

When we arrived at General Horseplay there were a bunch of people sitting in the back by the stage. The Marshal Morlock band was already in full swing. We walked around to a small bar that was set up out in the back and ordered a couple of drinks (at this point I really didn’t need any more, but I just mainly held the drink in my hand). I found a little table along the wall where I could sit. My husband stood near me since there really wasn’t any other options to sit down.

We enjoyed the entertainment especially when they performed Crasy by Dave Matthew’s Band. Normally you don’t hear bands cover DMB. I can see why the Marshal Morlock band has a following. They were a lot of fun to watch.

When they went on break we both realized we should head back to the Gardens – plus I was freezing. However, first we stopped back at the Backyard Bar. It was some band again playing from the Mile 0 Festival. Funny, we ran into Big Ed who was there watching the band play. We didn’t stay long though.

We made the walk back to the Gardens. I could not wait to get to sleep and warm up.


Friday, January 24 – Still Cold – The Saint, One Last Stop at the Sunset Tiki Bar, The Flaming Buoy

We woke up again to another chilly cloudy morning. Knowing it was our last full day in Key West, I felt like going to the Saint for breakfast. Brent and Julie have never been there and I thought it was again a nice “indoor” place to have breakfast. 

We freshened up and we met up once again with Brent and Julie. Before exciting the Gardens we ran into Lynn and Al enjoying breakfast at the Gardens. We joked about how maybe today it would warm up and we would see the sun. I looked at my phone and saw that it was going to warm back up, but of course on Sunday – the day after we leave. 

Even though it was a chilly morning, the winds had subsided so we walked down Duval. It isn’t a very long walk to the Saint located on Eaton St. We walked along Duval noticing more people coming in for the weekend. Inside I was so jealous. They are going to get warm weather if they are here for the next several days.

We made it to the Saint and when we walked into the restaurant, there was a table perfect for 4 open by the end of the bar. What luck! Usually my husband and I like to eat at the bar at the Saint, but with the 4 of us it would be easier to eat at a table. 

Once we sat down, the bartender came over and handed us menus and took our drink order. I was debating as to whether or not to go for the eggs benedict, but I decided to go with the standard two egg breakfast. While we were waiting for our breakfast to arrive, more and more guests would come and go. It turned out there was a self serve breakfast station at the end of the bar for the hotel guests staying there. Most of the guests were wearing outfits with a western flare. I figured that they were there for the Mile 0 Festival which was ending the next day.

Our breakfast and I thought my eggs were a little on the cooler side. All well – I still ate everything on my plate. When we were done, we made the walk towards Front St. and back down to the Sunset Tiki Bar at the Galleon for one last drink. I remembered that our friend Ramsey was working so I wanted to be sure to see her before we left.

This time walking down along the water, the winds were minimal that day and the sun was out. 

We walked in and sure enough Ramsey was working. We grabbed a couple of seats at the corner of the bar and ordered our drinks.

We talked for a bit before saying our goodbyes. Since we were leaving the next day, my husband suggested that we should go back to the Gardens to pack up our things. Plus we had the Gardens send out our laundry the other day that was brought back that was still sitting in a bag in a corner in our room. Oh how I hate packing when it is time to go, but I would rather just get it over with.

We walked back to the Gardens and went to our room where our laundry bag was waiting for us. In a way it made it easier to pack up most of our things since the clothes were folded up neatly in the bag. With mostly everything packed away in our luggage (besides what we were wearing for the plane the next day) we met up with Brent and Julie at the pool bar. Soon Lynn and Al joined us. It was kind of like how our trip started except with the cold weather and the thought of leaving tomorrow was on my mind. 

As we tried to stay warm near the heater that was set up right next to us (thank you bartender Phil), we contemplated where to have dinner that evening. While I was looking, I noticed I had a message on my phone from Zack that I missed from earlier. When I opened the message he said that he was playing with Caffeine Carl and the band that night at the Backyard Bar. I was so excited, but then I saw that they weren’t going to start until 10:30pm. 10:30?? No way am I going to be able to stay up for that? I guess we could try I thought to myself after all it is our last night. 

Then I went back to do a little searching on my phone to see where we could eat. I thought maybe Red Shoe Bistro. I used the Open Table app and no tables were available (which I figured since they generally just do the two seatings and it is a small place). Next option was maybe back to Kaya? I really wanted to try something new. Well not necessarily new, but some place we had not been to in a while. Then the Flaming Buoy came to mind. My husband and I hadn’t been there since they moved to the Eaton St. location. I tried the app on my phone and it said that there weren’t any tables available. Then I thought maybe I should just try calling them. When the gentleman answered the phone I asked him about availability for a table of 4. I mentioned 6 and then he counter offered with 6:30pm. Perfect I told him! So we were all set for dinner that night.

I quickly retreated to our room to freshen up a little and my husband did the same. When we were all ready to go, we made the short walk to Eaton St. (Ironically we were on Eaton St. earlier that morning to go to the Saint, but the Flaming Buoy is located on the other side of Duval.)

We walked in and the place was crowded, but I did see one table empty. That must be ours I thought. The hostess asked us our name and once we told him he seated us at a table kind of in the center of the restaurant. It was cozy and I loved looking around since I had never been there before. I noticed right away all of the Star Wars themed decor. It was quite interesting but fun at the same time.

We decided to share a bottle of wine (since it is a beer and wine only establishment). I looked at the wine list and picked a not too expensive bottle of red. I believe it was a malbec? The server came back over and I tasted the wine. It was delicious.

The next order of business was ordering our dinner. I wound up choosing the caesar salad to start, followed by the lobster thermidor. My husband select the trio they have for an appetizer that consists of mac and cheese, grilled shrimp and a caprese salad. I thought wow that’s a lot of food to start with. Then he went out of his comfort zone (steak) and ordered the chicken and waffles.

The appetizers arrived and my caesar salad was just what I was in the mood for. It was well dressed and refreshing. And when I looked at my husband’s trio, it wasn’t that large. There were 3 little or somewhat little bowls containing each item.

Then our main dishes arrived and my lobster thermidor was presented in a way I wasn’t expecting. It was still delicious don’t get me wrong, but I was expecting a rich sauce over the lobster tail. In a way it was probably better for me without the richness of a cream/ butter sauce. My husband enjoyed his chicken and waffles, (he said the chicken was a little dry) but I think he would have been happier with the filet mignon.

Everyone was too full to have dessert so we asked for the check when we were done. We walked back out onto Duval. It wasn’t that late – maybe around 9pm or so. As we walked near La Concha (which is now completely redone and has a pinkish coral facade), my husband suggested we check out the mojito bar. It was a great idea since I had to use the restroom anyway.

We walked in and it was beautiful and expansive. It did feel a bit cold in there though, maybe because there weren’t may people inside?

My husband went up to the bartender and ordered us each some sort of cocktail off the menu that we all selected. Not really being able to warm up inside we finished our drinks and headed back to the Gardens. At this point it was around 10:00pm and I was done. I knew with the travel day to follow I just didn’t have it in me to go the Backyard Bar even though I wanted to.

So we made the left hand turn back down Angela St. to the Gardens. As we neared the entrance to the Gardens we saw two familiar faces getting out of a vehicle grabbing guitars. It was Zack and Carl! Talk about timing?! We all hugged and said hello. We told them that we were settling in for the night and they even agreed that they were starting pretty late. After a quick conversation we all went our separate ways. They went one way towards the Backyard Bar and we went the other way, to back to our rooms.


Saturday, January 25 – A Beautiful Day Finally – And We Are Leaving

When I first woke up I could see the sun shining through the windows. Figures I thought.


When I first woke up I could see the sun shining through the windows. Figures I thought. This was the first time during our entire stay it was shining in our room. I almost felt sick to my stomach knowing that the cold front was leaving and so were we.

After my husband and I freshened up, we went through our things and made sure everything was packed away. I also went through the toiletries and tossed anything that we couldn’t bring back home in our carry on bags. 


Our flight wasn’t until 2pm that afternoon so we had time to have a nice breakfast out and about. We met up with Brent and Julie who weren’t leaving until the following day. Since it was a beautiful morning we agreed to walk down Duval back to Bagatelle. This time it won’t be as cold and windy we all thought. Grant it, it was still a little chilly but not nearly as cold as it was just a few days ago. Plus the sun felt so nice and warmed us up.

We walked down Duval and noticed many more people in town for the weekend. We arrived to Bagatelle and the hostess once again sat us upstairs. As I mentioned it was still a little brisk out so we opted to dine indoors again, but there were a few takers outside dining.  Being that it was our last meal if you will in Key West we all ordered screwdrivers when our server came over. She mentioned a few specials while we were looking over the menu. 

To start Julie ordered the glazed bacon for the table.

Then both Brent and Julie ordered the veggie omelet again and I went for the southern eggs benedict. I wasn’t going to be wearing a bathing suit anytime soon, so why not? My husband went with the standard eggs for his order.

As we waited for our breakfast, more and more people were arriving for breakfast. The place was getting quite busy. It was to be expected – it was a Saturday. Our breakfast arrived and I my eggs benedict looked amazing. That will hold me over for a while I thought. They tasted as good as they looked as well. I was so glad I ordered it.


When we were done with our breakfast we walked back to the Gardens to wait for the impending doom of leaving and going to the airport. As we were walking along Duval, we ran into Lynn and Al. It was good timing since we would most likely not seem them again before we left. They were staying a couple days longer, so they would get to experience some warm weather. Good for them I thought. Lynn was on her way to find the best bloody mary. She was sampling different places throughout their stay. I wonder which one was her favorite? I will have to find out. We all said good bye and made our walk back to the Gardens.

We went back to the room and grabbed our luggage. There was still some time before we had to go, so once I checked us out, we relaxed by the pool. Brent and Julie joined us and stayed with us until it was time to go. Those couple of hours felt like eternity.

Then it was that time. We got up and hugged them goodbye and told them we would see them soon. Not later… but soon.


I plugged in our coordinates for the Uber driver and within minutes there he was. We hopped in and soon we were on our way back to the airport. Once he dropped us off we were planning on having a drink at the Conch Flyer before going through securuity since we had some time, but it all depended on the TSA line. Well when we walked through the doors the TSA line was out of control. Even the TSA pre line had a long line. Most likely it was due to the fact many of the people that came for the Mile 0 Festival were leaving, even though technically it wasn’t over until that night.

So relunctantly we wound up going in the TSA pre line. It slowly moved, but it moved faster then the regular TSA line. Eventually we got through security and as always held our breath as we took the escalator down to the departure area. I cannot wait until they have the new airport open. Yes I will miss arriving and walking down the stairs and along the tarmac, but I won’t miss trying to find a place to sit or even stand while waiting to depart.

Luckily we found one of those tables near the bar and food area to stand around. My husband went on line to get us a couple of drinks. I wasn’t really in the mood for anything to drink, but I thought maybe I could have a sip or two. While we were waiting I was getting a kick out of one of the gate agents for one of the airlines announcing the flight to Chicago was boarding. He was imitating a Chicago accent while he was talking and everyone was chuckling while we were waiting. 

Soon it was time for us to walk over to the gate and somehow wait in line to board. We were group one so we tried to move towards the front, but there were so many people already standing there that weren’t even in group one. Most of them however, either had small children or needed extra help. 

After they boarded and the global passengers, etc. our group was finally called. We walked outside and around all the construction to our United flight, which is always the plane furthest away. As we were walking I saw a flight that just arrived with the passengers exciting the plane. I was so jealous with envy. They are going to have such wonderful weather. Good for them though.

Our flight left on time without any delays. It was a pretty uneventful flight which is always a welcomed experience. As we were nearing our arrival into Newark Liberty International Airport I looked down below and saw white. Everything was covered with snow and it looked so cold.

Once we landed, we grabbed our luggage and exited the plane. You could feel the cold temperature walking down the gate into the airport. I don’t think I ever warmed up during this entire trip except our arrival day.

We made it outside to meet up with our driver. The gust of cold air really woke us both up. It took about an hour and soon we were back home. At least we had our kitty waiting for us. (He did hide the entire time while we were away, so when we first came home we had to call him, but within a few minutes he did come out.)

Well this trip wasn’t the most memorable one regarding the weather, but it is usually a gamble visiting Key West in January. Sometimes you can get a warm spell – other times you can get a cold spell. However, this was the most unusual situation with the arctic blast affecting most of the country. Even though we didn’t get a chance to relax in the pool and/or wear our swimsuits, it was still a great time seeing our friends and being back in my happy place regardless.

A little bit of everything – Key West 4.13.24 – 4.20.24

It seems like just yesterday I was writing my trip report for January. This winter in New Jersey was not like it usually is. Yes we had a couple of snow storms but nothing like it used to be several years ago. By the time April rolled around for this trip I wasn’t even ready. I couldn’t believe how quickly the months passed by. Oh darn. It was time to go away again to my other happy place. This marked our 32nd time and I don’t say it with it being taken for granted. I always thank my lucky stars that we are so fortunate enough to frequent Key West as much as we do. 

However, several weeks before our scheduled return, my husband whom he shares a car repair garage with his brother, somehow had a part of a wheel bearing land on my husband’s foot. He called me in so much pain but luckily his sister-in-law works at a foot doctor. His brother called the doctor’s office and got him right in that same day avoiding an expensive trip to the emergency room.

I waited for the call and meanwhile I was thinking what are we supposed to do about Key West? All we do is walk around. How are we going to do this??? I watched the clock as I worked from home and finally got the call that afternoon. HUGE relief. He somehow just damaged his little pinky toe. It shattered like a cracked hardboiled egg shell, but somehow it stayed in tack. No surgery was needed. Oh my what a relief. All he had to do was take it easy and the doctor wrapped his little toe and said that he should be okay in a couple of weeks. 

Then the second thing that had me on edge was also around the same time, I noticed a red mark on my chest that was not going away. I have my 6 month follow up with my dermatologist in a couple of months, but I didn’t want to wait that long. I was able to get in to see my dermatologist right before our trip. The dermatologist said that it could be squamous cell skin cancer. I have had basal cell before on my forehead (that is why I try to always keep it covered while walking around in Key West) but this was new to me. While I waited for my biopsy results, I made sure to pack tops and dresses that provided coverage on my chest. After about a week or so I hadn’t heard anything back, so I gave them a call. Thankfully it came back benign and I was definitely relieved and ready to get back to Key West. 

Saturday, April 13th – Arrival Day – Gardens Hotel, Reunion of Friends, Blue Heaven

April is my favorite time to visit Key West. I find the weather for the most part rather mostly sunny and not too hot. And usually from our past experiences not much rain either. I checked the forecast several days before we were leaving and could not believe how perfect it looked and that made me smile. 

Our flight was scheduled to depart around the same time as our flight back in January which was around 9:30 that Saturday morning. I had scheduled our car service to pick us up at 6:00am. I was hoping that we would be leaving out of Terminal A at Newark Airport, but the United app said that our plane would be leaving from Terminal C. When we arrived at Terminal C, it was very busy to say the least. I was a bit surprised due to the fact it wasn’t a holiday weekend or anything since Easter fell earlier in the year, but then again Newark Airport is always busy. 

Since my husband and I have Clear we chose to get in that line instead of the TSA Pre line. The line wasn’t too long but once we were in line, we looked over and the TSA Pre line was nearly empty. We were half way to the kiosks at that point, so it wasn’t an option to leave the line. When we got to the kiosks, the TSA agent walked through the steps after my photo was taken. I was also asked to show my ID which luckily brought my drivers license with the REAL ID in addition to my passport card. I usually don’t bring my driver’s license to Key West since I am not driving anywhere, but prefer to carry it along during the day, instead of my passport card in case I need to show ID. I asked the agent about all the extra steps and he explained that they were updating everyone’s information thus the long wait on line. 

My husband on the other hand does not have his REAL ID driver’s license yet since we have our passport cards and passports. However, the passport card wasn’t enough. So the next time we go to the airport, we are going to have to go through the entire process again but this time he will have to bring is passport. 

Eventually we made it through TSA and walked down towards our gate. Our gate was located further away from where the familiar Terminal C lounge we usually go to that was recently renovated. As we walked down towards Gate 120, we saw signs for another United Club Lounge. I was hesitant to go thinking it was one of those pop-up lounges that aren’t very comfortable. 

As we got closer to the lounge we saw that it was up one level and looked brand new. We walked in and it was beautiful. United must have recently renovated this lounge as well. As we walked in we could see all the windows, similar to the other two new United club lounges. There were two open seats at the bar so we sit down. We ordered a couple of breakfast beverages as we waited for our boarding time.

Once again, our friends Brent and Julie were meeting us in Key West. They were lucky enough to already be down there so while we were waiting in the lounge, we reached out to let them know we were on schedule to arrive around 1pm. I also heard from another couple we met a couple of years ago back in October of 2022, Lynn and Al from Long Island. They were flying out of Laguardia around the same time as us. We all wound up planning on meeting back in Key West that week in April.

It was nearing our boarding time, so we grabbed our things and walked to our gate. I think the last time we left from this gate was years ago when we were traveling to Grand Cayman or Nassau. I couldn’t remember which one it was, but it was a long time ago.

Eventually we heard the announcement that they were beginning to board our flight. Once everyone was settled we were on our way back to Key West. The flight was uneventful which is always a good thing. Soon I could see all the hues below of blues and greens, which without fail, always makes me happy and excited. 

Not only we were returning to Key West, but we were joining a bunch of friends as well. 

We landed in to Key West about 25 minutes early – no complaints there. Once we disembarked from the plane, we had to wait until the majority of passengers were off the plane before we could advance down the tarmac. The sun was shining and the sky was a brilliant blue. Life was good that day. I was starting to get a little hot, but thankfully we were given the go ahead to walk towards the airport. Still under construction, we had to walk around all the work they are doing. It does look like progress has been made, but I can’t see how it is going to be completed anytime soon. 

Another flight landed around the same time as us, but luckily no one was waiting for a taxi when we walked out to the taxi stand. We jumped in the first available taxi and told our driver those magical words “to the Gardens Hotel” and we were on our way. I never get tired of that first view of Smathers Beach as we drive down towards Old Town. Seeing all the familiar landmarks and restaurants along the way always makes me feel a sense of familiarity. I get extremely excited when I see the yellow brick wall that surrounds the Gardens. Soon I could see it appear and we were back “home”. I say home, since that is what it feels like when my husband and I return to the Gardens. We have become quite friendly with the staff. I guess that’s what happens when you stay at the same place time after time again and I wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else. 

Once the taxi dropped us off, we walked in to check in. It was Rhoda at the front desk and she recognized us right away. With a couple swipes of the credit card we were all set. Our room wasn’t ready just yet, so we left our luggage inside while we walked back outside to meet up with Brent and Julie who were waiting for us. It was so nice to see them again. I sometimes tell the story that how we have been to Key West so many times, it feels like one continuous trip, but a couple months of work tend to get in the way from time to time.

Another bonus was our friend Peggy was working behind the bar. She gave us both big hugs and welcomed us back. After our hellos, we ordered a couple of cold beverages. It was so nice to be back again. 

We chatted for a bit and not before long, Lynn and Al from Long Island arrived. We all exchanged hugs and made room for them to join us. While we were catching up, we were notified that our room was ready. I wasn’t exactly motivated to leave my post and go to our room, so my husband took the liberty and went to our room where he unpacked our things. I thought that was so nice of him to do that. Lynn and Al also went to unpack their things. When my husband returned, he noticed there was another couple sitting at the bar. He asked me if they were the couple we met several years ago at the Gardens that are from our favorite Jersey Shore town, Lavallette. I didn’t really pay any attention because I was talking to Peggy. Then I looked over and mentioned that they did look familiar. As we were discussing Lavallette, both of their ears perked up.

We remembered the husband’s name, Vincent but couldn’t remember his wife’s. We mentioned to them how we met a few years ago while staying at the Gardens. Also when we visited Lavallette shortly after that trip for Labor Day weekend, we ran into them. I think they remembered us, but regardless it was kind of comical. Apparently they now live in Florida and moved out of New Jersey. Maybe we should follow their lead.

Everyone returned to the bar and we continued the conversation for a while. It felt like one joyous reunion. So much so, I had everyone get up so I could get Peggy to take a picture of all of us.

On side note, I had every intention to unpack our things and walk around Key West once we settled in. However, we were having such a good time, and with such a beautiful backdrop of the Gardens, I couldn’t peel myself away to leave.

That afternoon went by quickly and it was nearing the time to freshen up and get ready for dinner. A couple months ago I made dinner reservations at Blue Heaven. We used to go to Blue Heaven all the time for breakfast years ago, but now it is nearly impossible to go without having to wait for a long time to be seated. I actually find going to dinner far more enjoyable.

Brent and Julie joined us as walked down Petronia to Blue Heaven.

I made the reservations for 6:30 so the sun was still shining when we arrived. I gave the hostess my name and we were immediately seated at a nice table. 

Our server went over the special that evening which was red grouper. 

I knew exactly what I was going to order to start, the grilled miso eggplant salad. When I first tried it several visits ago, I fell immediately in love with the dish. So when our server came back over to take our order, I ordered the grilled miso eggplant salad to start and the portobello mushroom entree. My husband and Julie ordered the filet mignon and Brent ordered the special.

As we waited for our food to arrive, the sun began to set. This is the point where Blue Heaven becomes magical when all the lights begin to turn on. 

They also had a band playing in the background, but I wasn’t familiar with who they were. I noticed still since COVID, they keep the amount of dining tables to a minimum – which probably adds to the longer wait times during breakfast.

Our first course came out and I was ready to dig in. The miso eggplant was just as tasty as I remembered. It was delicious and tender. I just love the combination of the miso flavor on the eggplant. Julie ordered the sea scallop appetizer and she shared it with Brent. I think my husband ordered the caesar salad but I can’t be a hundred percent sure.

Then it was time for our main course. I honestly didn’t expect much from ordering a portobello mushroom for dinner, but when I looked down at my plate, it looked amazing. It almost looked like a piece of filet mignon, which my husband had. I would not hesitate to order it again. It was that delicious and full of flavor. After a day of travel, it was the perfect thing to order for me.

After our meals, neither of us could indulge in their famous key lime pie. We agreed our best course of action would be to walk back to the Gardens and relax for the rest of the evening. We made tentative plans to meet up for our usual first day breakfast at La De Ta the following morning and retired to our rooms.

Sunday, April 14th – La De Ta, Sunset Tiki Bar, General Horseplay, Jazz at the Gardens, Bob’s on Margaret

Surprisingly I slept pretty good for the first night. Unfortunately my husband snores and it makes for a difficult night sleep. I think we were both exhausted from the travel day that we slept through the night. We freshened up and made the quick walk down to Cuban Coffee Queen. It was an absolutely incredible day with the weather. The humidity was low, but the air felt warm and comfortable. And the sky – that sky was again, a brilliant blue color.

When we walked up to Cuban Coffee Queen, there wasn’t much of a line, but we saw a large group standing near the menu they have on display outside of the place. Luckily they were still deciding so we walked by and waited our turn.

Once we had our two cuban americans in hand, we strolled back to the Gardens to meet up with Brent and Julie.

We walked out back onto Simonton and made the not too far walk to La De Ta. Again the weather was simply perfect.  

We walked in and our two favorite tables were available. We sat down and ordered a couple of “Welcome to Key West” breakfast beverages. All of us know the menu by now so we didn’t need to contemplate too long what we wanted to order.

My husband ordered the usual Eggs Benedict Blackstone and I went with the regular two eggs over medium with their signature caramelized pepper bacon. Brent and Julie ordered scrambled eggs with sides of bacon. While we waited for our breakfast, we discussed what we had planned for the day and watched the people walk by along with the occasional conch train. 

It was such a nice way to start our first full day in Key West. Our breakfast was served and it was tasty like it normally is. 

When we were done with breakfast we took the Duval St. route back to the Gardens. Brent and Julie went to relax at the hotel while we headed out for the day.

Once my husband and I regrouped, we took the right hand turn down Duval. 

The streets were still quiet and not too busy. We walked along the bight and then made it down to our favorite place to have a drink and look at the water, the Sunset Tiki Bar located at the Galleon, even though it isn’t technically part of the Galleon.

We walked in and there were a bunch of people sitting down, most likely since it was a Sunday. The Galleon tends to be busier on Sundays when locals stop in for a drink. We found a couple of open seats along the side. As we were settling in we said hello to Ramsey who was working the bar. She welcomed us back and didn’t even have to ask what we were having. We always have the Deep Eddy Sweet Tea and water with a squeeze of lemon over ice. They taste so good, but you have to be careful because they can hit you. 

While we were chatting with Ramsey we saw another familiar face, Phil who owns the Sunset Tiki Bar. He always jokes with us asking when we are going to move down to Key West. If it wasn’t so expensive and money was no object we would do it. However, being realistic it is just something that we can only dream about. 

When we finished our drinks, we thanked Ramsey and headed back out onto Duval. 

Where to next we both thought? Then we remembered that General Horseplay is open earlier on the weekends verses during the week. Plus there is a bartender that works there from the same town as my husband’s automotive repair garage. 

We walked around for a bit before turning onto Caroline St.

As we were about to enter the place, a large group of people were exciting. We walked in as the bartender was cleaning up. We couldn’t have timed it any better. The air conditioning they had on felt refreshing as we sat down.

I went ahead and ordered the Murricane. It is the only beverage that contains bourbon that I can drink. The way the watermelon mixes in, it hides the bourbon in a way that makes it taste. My husband was more adventurous and ordered a manhatten. I took one sip and wow it was strong. Obviously we only stayed for one drink a piece. Anymore we wouldn’t make it to jazz later on at the Gardens.

Speaking of the Gardens, after our drinks at General Horseplay we walked back down on to Duval to the Gardens. The staff was already setting up for jazz that evening which starts at 5pm. Brent and Julie were relaxing by the pool when we arrived. Julie reminded us that she made reservations at Bob’s on Margaret later on that evening for 6:30pm, which gave us about an hour to listen to jazz before walking to the restaurant.

My husband and I took turns freshening up before jazz. While we were waiting for Brent and Julie, we grabbed a couple of seats available near the bar. Jim the General Manager came by to talk to us and George who also works at the Garens.

Peggy came by to show us her new adorable puppy.

Soon the music started and more and more people continued to walk in. My husband and I noticed that Kate, the owner of the Gardens sat down with her friends. We gave her a couple of minutes to settle in before we walked on over to say hello. She is always so warm and welcoming to us every time we see her during our stay. 

Time was moving along and it was getting to be about that time to walk to Bob’s. Once Brent and Julie were ready, we walked on to Simonton St. as we passed a banner I recently did for the Gardens promoting their Kentucky Derby that was being held in a couple of weeks.

Soon we turned onto to Southard St. It was such a pretty walk down Southard. I love walking down the less traveled roads in Key West. 

They are so peaceful and you really get the sense of what it would be like to live in Key West, vs. all the commotion along Duval St.

We made the turn to Margaret, which is where Bob’s is located – hence the name Bob’s on Margaret. We were seated this time outside which was a lovely table. During our last visit, we made a last minute reservation and also with the threat of rain, we had to sit inside.

Our server came over and read us the specials. Similar to last time, the special catch of the day was swordfish. The last time we were at Bob’s I splurged and ordered the rack of lamb. This time I felt like seafood since I had a vegetarian meal the prior evening. To start, I decided to go with the beet and radicchio salad, followed by merken glazed salmon. My husband started off with their beef carpaccio and ordered again, the filet mignon. Brent and Julie ordered peach burrato salad and the strawberries and spinach salad. For their main meals I think they both ordered the swordfish special again. 

By the time our first courses came out, I was quite hungry. We had not eaten anything since breakfast, which is the norm for me. I tend to eat only 2 meals a day. Anyway, when I took the first bite of my salad, I thought it was interesting. The beets were tasty, but there were only a few on the plate. Most of the plate was covered in radicchio. The radicchio, I know can be kind of tart, but there was so much of it and it was very tough to eat. Even the salads that Brent and Julie had were a bit of a disappointment as well. The only thing that was enjoyable was my husband’s beef carpaccio. 

Needless to say I didn’t finish my salad. On the other hand, when our main course came out, they looked wonderful. My husband’s filet looked excellent and so did my salmon. Thankfully they tasted as good as they looked. 

So good, that I finished my entire plate. 

Brent and Julie also enjoyed their meals as well. Bob’s wasn’t as good as it was the first time we went there, but at least our main meals saved the night. Next time I would shy away from ordering a salad, unless it is a caeser salad. It is pretty hard to mess up a caesar salad. 

When we were done with dinner we took a leisurely stroll back to the Gardens. It was a perfect evening for all us to relax in the gazebo and have a night cap before getting some sleep. 

Monday, April 15th – Breakfast Club Too, Sunset Tiki Bar (again of course), Milagro

We woke up to again, another picture perfect day. The humidity was still low and the temperature wasn’t too hot. The night before, we made plans with Brent and Julie to have breakfast at Breakfast Club Too. My husband and I had not been there for quite some time, and thought it would be a nice change to return. Plus Brent and Julie had never been there before. 

So after a couple of quick showers, we met Brent and Julie down by the coffee station that the Gardens has set up on the back porch area. I wanted to go to Cuban Coffee Queen, but everyone was set to walk to breakfast. 

Again, we took Simonton down all the way to Greene St. We were a little later then our typical time to have breakfast, so I was prepared to either have to wait or not be able to sit outside. 

When we walked up to be seated, just as I expected, it was packed. I was almost certain that we were going to have to wait. Surprisingly, the hostess grabbed four menus and seated us right away. We were seated all the way in the back, which was fine. It actually made for a great photo opportunity to get the entire space of Breakfast Club too in one shot. 

Despite being so busy, we didn’t wait long for our server to come over and ask us if we wanted one of their bloody mary concoctions that they are known for. None of us took the offer, so we all just ordered coffee. The bloody marys do look fabulous that they serve, but I can never do it. I love tomatoes, tomato sauce, but in a drink I can’t do it. I have tried but can’t get into them. 

Brent, Julie and I all ordered our custom omelets while my husband opted for something different – the croque de madame. As we waited for our breakfasts to arrive, we mentioned to Brent and Julie that we were probably going to walk on over to the Sunset Tiki Bar. Again we slept in a bit, so it wouldn’t be too early to have a cocktail by the time we were done with breakfast.

When our breakfasts were served, I couldn’t believe the size of my husband’s order. I wish I took a picture, but I was too focused on capturing my omelet with a side of cheesy grits. Without any surprise, everything was delicious and served hot. I was quite certain we would have to wait for a while with all the people that were dining there, but it wasn’t long at all. 

Everyone enjoyed their meals. I think their portions tend to be on the larger scale than most places. So much that I don’t think anyone was able to finish their meals. Even the omelets were enormous. Once we settled the bill, we headed out to walk towards the Bite.

We walked to the Bight and I noticed that more and more stickers were put on Jimmy Buffett’s old recording studio, Shrimpboat Sound Studio. 

I remember so many times back in the day, we would visit Key West and had no idea that big old white box was his recording studio. Now it is common knowledge by both locals and visitors that come to the island. I am still so sad how he left this world too soon.

We walked past the Conch Farm and by the empty area that was previously occupied by Wahlburgers. I wonder if some other establishment will buy that spot. I personally miss the old White Tarpon there. It was great to go inside and grab a key lime martini and walk back outside and sit at one of the tables and listen to live music. Ironically I don’t hear much about the White Tarpon, but appears to always be busy during lunch hours and especially happy hour. 

We walked past Alonso’s and made it all the way down to the Sunset Tiki Bar. 

This time Candace was working behind the bar. She recognized all of us and welcomed us back. She made us a couple of drinks while we all talked about what we were up to since the last time we were in Key West. I mentioned to Candace how I was headed to Minnesota in a couple of weeks for work where ironically she used to live. 

Brent and Julie decided to get back to the Gardens while my husband and I convinced ourselves to stay for one more drink before walking back as well.

When we were done with our beverages we thanked Candace and walked back down Simonton. 

Again the weather was just picture perfect. We got back to the Gardens and relaxed for a bit before getting ready for dinner. Dinner that evening was at Milagro. Brent and Julie have been there several times, but we had never dined there before. I was excited to try something new, especially after reading all the great reviews on Tripadvisor. Julie went ahead and made reservations for all of us a couple of months ago. So I was already looking forward to it before we even got back. 

It was time to freshen up for dinner and once we were all ready, we all set off down Simonton to the Santa Clara Suites. 

I had no idea that Milagro was located in the hotel. I don’t think I have ever seen the hotel before. Maybe once or twice when we had one of those taxis that pick you up from the airport and included as many passengers as they can and drop them off along the way. Never again. Honestly I don’t think they can do that anymore? Every time we grab a taxi when we exit the airport the driver takes only us. 

The entrance to Milagro was beautiful. It had all glass and water falls flowing. We walked in and the hostess seated us at a nice table, however the sun was setting right in my eye. So the hostess immediately moved us over to another table. 

While we were perusing the menu, we noticed a little circular card in the center of our table. It listed the specials of the day. There was a special black berry margarita, along with the catch of the day. It was hogfish and grilled shrimp. My husband immediately jumped on the idea of the hogfish, but then I mentioned how they are known for their prime rib. I really don’t cook red meat at home since I rarely eat it myself so I knew it was something he should order. I know how much he used to enjoy prime rib when we would go to this one restaurant near our house

With not too much convincing my husband did go ahead and order the prime rib. I myself opted for the special. To start, we both shared the fried calamari. Both Brent and my husband also ordered a couple of manhattens. I decided to try one of their margaritas since that is what they are known for.

When the calamari arrived I was ready to dig in. It was light and crispy – a perfect starter. Then it came time for our main meals to be served. I could not believe the prime rib. It looked amazing, like on a cover of a high end magazine or cookbook. I had to try a little piece and was glad I did. The prime rib was outstanding. Then I stared at my meal and while it was good, it just didn’t have the same pizazz as the prime rib. Both Brent and Julie enjoyed their meals, but again I can’t remember what they ordered. Maybe the swordfish?

After our meals, we were all too stuffed to order any dessert. A walk back to the Gardens was in order. I was looking forward to the walk so that I can walk off some of the dinner.

While we were walking back I was thinking that maybe we could go out somewhere and listen to music or something. However when we got back to the Gardens it was a nightcap and sleep. 

Tuesday, April 16th – Latitudes, Smokin Tuna (x2), Green Parrot

We woke up to another wonderful day with the sun shining and the sky a brilliant blue once again. Julie made reservations for us to have breakfast at Latitudes, which is always a favorite of mine. I almost prefer eating breakfast there instead of dinner, but you don’t get the sunset obviously.

We didn’t have to be at the dock to catch the water taxi until 9:45am, so after my husband and I freshened up, we walked on over to Cuban Coffee Queen. Again, there was no line. We quickly got our two cuban americans and walked back to the Gardens to meet up with Brent and Julie.

Everyone was so excited to go to Latitudes especially with the weather we were experiencing. When we were all set, we took a leisurely stroll down Duval. The streets were still quiet so I figured that there weren’t any cruise ships in town that morning.

Last time we went to Latitudes, we wound up leaving through Truman Annex to get back towards the Gardens and it was such a pretty walk. So we decided to do the same thing again to get to the Opal Resort to catch the water taxi.

It is such a beautiful manicured section of Key West. I remember one time, we almost were going to rent a place in the Truman Annex, but disappointingly the owner didn’t realize he already had the week reserved when I gave him the go ahead. And then we wound up returning to the Gardens and haven’t thought about staying at the Truman Annex ever since.

We walked through the grounds which led us to the Opal Resort. There wasn’t a cruise ship in port, so there weren’t a lot of people walking around. We found a bench to sit down and wait for the water taxi. It was so pretty to look out on to the water. I was trying to take in the perfect weather while we waited.

The water taxi eventually showed up and we filed on to the boat. I didn’t realize there were so many people waiting since they were all spread out. We somehow managed to find our usual seats in the outside section of the boat. 

Once everyone was on the boat we took the quick 8-10 minute ride over to Sunset Key. There was a slight cool breeze along the way that I wasn’t expecting. However when we arrived at Sunset Key, it began to warm up nicely.

When we arrived at the dock, we were one of the first group of people off. We followed the hostess up to the restaurant. She then seated us at a lovely table outside near the water. It was a perfect backdrop while we looked over the menu. I noticed there were several new additions to their breakfast menu, but I decided to go ahead with the smoked salmon lox and a bagel. Usually throughout our time in Key West, there is a point where I have had enough eggs. I call it “egged out”. Today was the day. 

To start, we all ordered a breakfast cocktail. Julie ordered a mimosa, while my husband and I ordered Tito’s and fresh squeezed orange juice. Brent wound up going with a cappuccino. It took some time before our server came back with our drinks and take our order, but once he did, all was good in the world.

Our breakfast, like our drinks, took some time to arrive but we were in no rush. I did have a lot of things planned that day that I wanted to do, but it wasn’t until later on. When our breakfast arrived, we were all ready to eat. I love how they present the plates on a tiered display they carry out. My smoked salmon was delicious and exactly what I was in the mood for. I also loved the avocado accompaniment. 

They also had salt and pepper grinders on the table. I may be late to the party, but I have never seen any sort of grinders like they had. They were automatic. As soon as you placed grinder above your food, it would grind out the pepper and also the salt one as well.

When we were finished with our breakfast it was nearing the time to catch the next water taxi. So we quickly paid our bill and walked back down to the dock as the water taxi was approaching. If we missed it, we would have had to wait another half hour until the next one.

After the quick return trip back to Key West, we made plans to meet back up with Julie at the Smokin Tuna to catch Caffeine Carl and Zack Seemiller. Brent was going to go back and practice, since he was going to be playing at the Smokin Tuna that evening with Nick Brownell.

My husband and I wanted to do a little walking around and of course made it back to the Sunset Tiki Bar. Candace was working again so she didn’t even ask us what we wanted to drink. We both agreed that we would only stay for one. Well that one became two, but then we realized it was nearing the time that we were supposed to meet Julie at the Smokin Tuna. My husband sent her quick text letting her know we were on our way. We thanked Candace and headed out towards Duval.

We wound up walking around in to the back way to the Smokin Tuna on Telegraph Lane. Meanwhile I was thinking about all the buzz that I was hearing how the Smokin Tuna was closing down. I couldn’t believe it. I remember when it first opened and we were so excited to see all the live music that has come through its doors. It became our favorite place to listen to live music.

We walked in and saw Julie sitting at one of the tables near the stage. We waved at Carl and Zack as we walked on over to join Julie. Phil the bartender was working and he came on over to give us hugs and welcome us back. It is always fun to see Phil at the Tuna. 

Phil brought us over a couple Miller Lites and we talked for a bit. We asked him about what was going on with the Tuna. And pretty much it came down to the owner of the space for the Tuna. He didn’t want to renew with the owner who owns the Smokin Tuna Business. There was some disagreement between the two so May 4th was going to be their last day being open. The newer section behind the main stage and bar area, is where the Tuna is supposed to move to. And to the side of the area is the old Keyviche building that is also owned by the same woman who owns the Tuna Business.  So apparently they are going to blow out those walls and use it for rest rooms, etc. It sounds very odd and I don’t see how it is going to work, but I hope it does.

While we were enjoying Carl and Zack play, my husband went on a little mission to look for our name plates. We figured we better find them before the place closes down. Who knows if they will move them or just simply throw them away? Sure enough, it took my husband a quick walk around and found our names on the back wall. I couldn’t believe he found them so quickly. Then again, when I was looking, I kept focusing on the posts.

Once Carl and Zack took a break, they came over to say hello. It was great to see them as usual. I wanted to stay longer, but my husband suggested we should head back to the Gardens to relax for a bit since we had a long day still.

We said our goodbyes and walked back down Duval to the Gardens.

It was a good plan, since several weeks ago I was checking out the Green Parrot music schedule and saw that Tony Baltimore was playing there doing a Pearl Jam Tribute. Pearl Jam is my favorite band and I couldn’t believe the timing. I know he has played there before with the Pearl Jam Tribute band, but we always missed it.

Since Brent was playing at the Tuna with Nick at 8:30, I thought that we could head on over to the Parrot right before sound check at 5:30. Then we could meet Brent and Julie at the Tuna and have something to eat there. 

We got back to the Gardens and ran into Lynn and Al. We mentioned to them that Brent was playing at the Tuna that night so they said that they would stop by and check it out. After we regrouped at the Gardens, my husband and I made the short walk to the Parrot. We walked in and it was already filled with both locals and visitors alike. We made it to the back bar where I was able to find a small bench that overlooked the direction of the stage. I thought it was a perfect spot to watch the band perform. While they were setting up, I noticed one of the band members was Vincent Bergamo, whom we know from Lavallette, NJ. I walked on over to say hello before returning to my little spot to watch the band play.

Within a few minutes the band started to play. I couldn’t believe how good they sounded. I know, no one can replicate Eddie Vedder’s voice, but wow just to experience hearing the music of my favorite band in Key West made me so happy.

We stayed for a while but we knew we had to get on over to the Tuna. When we were leaving we ran into Phil the bartender from the Tuna. 

When we made it back to the Tuna and found Julie again sitting at one of the tables near the stage. She was joined by another couple, Matt and Teri. They didn’t know one another, but Julie asked if we could join them at the table and they welcomed us to sit with them. Turned out they were very nice people and we wound up talking for a bit as the band was playing. That’s how Key West goes. You meet people all the time.

The band sounded great as always. It was fun time and even Lynn and Al showed up. 

 It felt like a party in you will.

As we were enjoying the music I realized we hadn’t eaten anything yet. I wasn’t exactly hungry at that time, plus with all the drinks on the table, I couldn’t see how I could eat anything. There wasn’t any room. I should have had something though. I wanted to stay until the end but the long day was catching up to me. I wound up headed out and made it to the Gardens by myself. I was even proud of myself for remembering the code to open the gate to get back in.

Shortly after I made it back my husband came back as well. It was time for some much needed sleep. 

Wednesday, April 17th – Pepe’s, Gardens Pool, Kaya Island Eats, Smokin Tuna

We wound up sleeping in that morning. Brent and Julie were going to eat at the Gardens. Meanwhile, I felt like walking around and I was very hungry since I didn’t eat the night before. Once my husband and I were ready, we started walking down Duval towards Front St. We thought about maybe going to Azur, which I do enjoy, but they tend to take a while to bring out your food after you order. 

I was thinking about maybe Harpoon Harry’s so we turned on to Caroline St. As we were nearing Pepe’s, my husband suggested to go in. 

We both looked inside and saw the little bar in the back. So we walked on in and sat at the two empty seats. The bartender immediately came over and asked us if we would like menus. We told her yes while we ordered a couple of drinks.

Again, I didn’t feel like eggs, plus it was later on in the morning so I decided to go with a BLT. My husband ordered the biscuits and gray. After we placed our order, we looked around and it was charming. We only went to Pepe’s once throughout our stays a long time ago and all I can remember it was so busy and we were seated in the other room in the back. We were kind of packed in there and I wasn’t crazy of the omelet I had due to some sort of garlic sauce that was way too powerful. My husband felt the experience wasn’t one to remember either so we never went back.

I am so glad we did however. You get that feeling of what Key West used to be like. While we were waiting we saw a few locals come and go having breakfast. There was even a couple that sat behind us that brought their dogs, who were very well behaved. The owners told us to be careful when we were leaving since they were right behind our chairs. They were so cute just lying there.

Our breakfast came out and it wasn’t anything fancy, but it did the job. My BLT was tasty and my husband had no complaints with his biscuits and gravy.

We finished our breakfast and then we walked around the Bite before making our way back to the Gardens. 

It was another beautiful day, maybe a little bit more humid. When we got back to the Gardens, we saw Brent relaxing by the pool. What a good idea we both thought. So my husband went back to our room to throw on a pair of swim trunks. I was already wearing my bathing suit so I was ready to jump in to the pool. 

The pool felt so refreshing. Back in January, it was too cold to go in the pool but not this time. It was a nice afternoon spending it at the Gardens. 

We didn’t have any plans that evening for dinner. I did however, wanted to go back to the Smokin Tuna to see Caffeine Carl and Zack Seemiller play with the band since it probably would be the last time seeing them on that stage. So we decided to go to Kaya that evening since it is on the way to the Smokin Tuna. Plus we had Lola’s the following night, so a reasonable priced dinner was definitely preferred. Sometimes you don’t realize how much money you go through until you check your wallet. 

We both freshened up and grabbed a couple of seats at the Gardens bar. While we were enjoying a cocktail, Lynn and Al showed up. They were on their way to Blue Heaven for dinner. I showed Al the photo of the portobello mushroom entree I had our first night and he wanted to try it, being a vegetarian himself. We also talked about going back to Kaya Island Eats. They enjoy that place as well. I am particularly very fond of the rasta pasta. I tend to shy away from pasta while on vacation, but that night was going to be an exception.

Once Brent and Julie were ready they joined us at the bar. We all enjoyed a cocktail, a glass of wine for me, while listening to the live music on the porch. 

Then it was time to make the short walk down Angela St. to Duval. Kaya is located just a block down Duval. You can also access the other entrance from Angel St. once you cross Duval. We walked in the entrance off of Duval which has a nice large and spacious bar to dine at. 

We were one of the first ones there, so we had no issue securing four seats at the bar. I went ahead and ordered a mai tai while we looked over the menu. They had a special of buffalo cauliflower that sounded interesting. I wound ordering them as a starter and then the rasta pasta with portobello mushrooms.  My husband ordered their tuna poke nachos, which I love as well, along with the rasta pasta – but with chicken.

We didn’t wait long for our first course to come out. The cauliflower did in a way look like chicken. I am not sure if they actually made them and/or were perhaps frozen? Nevertheless they were surprisingly very good. I didn’t miss the chicken what so ever. My husband tried one and thought the same thing. They were just as good as buffalo chicken. I did have to try one of my husband’s tuna nachos. And as always they were tasty.

Then when our rasta pasta meals came out, both of them were chicken. I mentioned it to our bartender and he thought I said chicken as well. I told him not to worry about it. The chicken was delicious and I had no complaints about it. On a side note, that always seems to happen. Whenever my husband and I order the same thing, one of us gets our meal the correct way, the other not so much. That’s why I usually don’t order the same thing as my husband or someone else at our dinner party for that reason. As we were enjoying our rasta pasta, the bartender came back out with a plate loaded with sautéed portobello mushrooms. I thought that was so nice. There was so much of it that I was offering to my husband, Julie and Brent. Overall everyone enjoyed their meals. After we paid the bill we made our way back down Duval to the Smokin  Tuna.

As we were walking, we still had some time before Caffeine Carl and the Buzz came on stage. My husband told Brent about how good his manhatten drink was at General Horseplay that he wanted to try it. 

So before we went to the Tuna, we continued down Duval to General Horseplay. When we walked in, there was a guy playing in the back stage that sounded pretty good. As we were going to go inside, the place was packed. My husband suggested that he would go in and order us a couple of drinks while we sat in one of the booths outside. Julie didn’t want anything so it was 3 drinks he would have to carry. Probably not a good idea. 

When Brent and Julie sat down, I ran inside and grabbed my drink, the Murricane of course, from my husband. Then he joined us with two manahattens in tow. One for him and one for Brent. As we were sipping our drinks, we saw another band come in to set up. It was The Marshall Morlock Band. I was kind of curious to hear them play and so were other people. I noticed more and more people coming through and going in the back area to claim a seat.

But I kept thinking about the Smokin Tuna closing and also Julie made tentative plans of having Myles Mancuso join us there who just got back in to town. So we all rallied and walked down to the Tuna. We wound up walking through the back area where the new Tuna is supposedly supposed to be. It will definitely be smaller I thought to myself and how will they compete if the old Tuna has entertainment on their stage? Will it be dueling bands back and forth? 

When we got to near the bar, all the tables near the stage were occupied. We thought that we would have to stand for a while. Then I spotted two familiar faces at the end table. It was the couple Teri and Matt who we met the other night. Perfect! I walked on over and they welcomed us back to their table. Talk about luck. The band was already playing since we got a little caught up at General Horseplay.

Still kept thinking to myself this is it at “this” Tuna. While we were enjoying the music Myles showed up. We talked to him for a bit and he was telling us a little more about the owner of the Smokin Tuna property. Apparently he is some big wig from California that is the owner of Viagra or something to that nature. He owns several properties in Key West and also had something to do with how Hank’s had to move the music to the back and Garbo’s food truck to the front. Noise complaints, etc. Overall he sounds like a great answer to Key West (obviously being sarcastic). 

It was a fun night enjoying the music and hanging out with everyone. We wound up staying to the end. While Carl was breaking down his equipment I went over to get a photo with him. Again thinking the last time I will see him on the stage. I also wanted to get a picture with Zack but he had already left.

We were contemplating an Uber, but decided to make the walk back to the Gardens. When we got back I was ready to turn in.

Thursday, April 18th – Bagatelle, Smokin Tuna (yes again), Lola’s

After sleeping in again, we woke up to another gorgeous day. We both quickly took showers and compiled our laundry in to a couple of bags. While I was finishing up, my husband dropped off our laundry to the front desk. I find the cost to have our laundry done towards the end of our trip very reasonable. Plus knowing I have a lot less laundry to do when I get back home is a big win for me.

We made plans with Brent and Julie while walking back from the Tuna last night to all go to Bagatelle for a late breakfast / brunch. After my husband dropped off the laundry, we all headed back out down Duval. There were definitely more people walking around and the conch trains were loaded with people. A cruise ship must be in town we all thought. And sure enough as we neared the end of Duval, you could see the top of a cruise ship docked outside the Opal Resort.

When we reached Bagatelle, it looked very busy. Brent and Julie prefer to sit upstairs on the outside porch. We asked the hostess if we could be seated upstairs. She walked us up the stairs and sat us at a table on the side. There was a nice large table empty in the front corner. I asked if we could sit there, but unfortunately someone had reserved that table. I made a note to myself. Maybe next time I should make a reservation for that table. I do know they take reservations for any time of the day at Bagatelle.

Since it was later on in the morning, both my husband and I were craving lunch not breakfast. I decided to go with a caesar salad with blackened mahi, while my husband ordered a burger topped with a fried egg. There was no holding back there. Brent and Julie went ahead and ordered the garden omelete, which I somehow missed on the menu.

When our food arrived, it looked wonderful. The caesar salad was delicious. My husband’s burger looked delightful as well. I thought how that will keep him satisfied until dinner. Julie had made dinner reservations that evening at Lola’s for the 6:00pm seating. Lynn and Al were also going to Lola’s that evening. 

I was pretty full when we were all done with our meals. The garden omelet that both Julie and Brent ordered looked really good by the way. It was served with an arugula salad. Next time I would order that.

We paid our tab and walked back on to Duval. Brent and Julie wanted to head back to the Gardens to do some work while my husband and I opted to walk back to the Sunset Tiki Bar. Candace one again was behind the bar. I told my husband we are just going to have one this time and try not to grow roots there. We chatted with Candace for a bit before making our way back out to our next destination. 

Our next destination wound up being the Smokin Tuna again. We were thinking about going to First Flight, but the idea of it may be our last time at the Tuna made our decision for us. Plus I got a message from Phil, the bartender, about how the guy playing at the Tuna at the afternoon slot is entertaining. So with that in mind, we walked in to the Tuna. The place was empty, but there was entertainment. It turned out the guy playing, named Fried Newt was the husband of one of the girls that works at the Tuna, Corley who we have gotten to know as well. He sang one of his originals dedicated to Jimmy Buffett that I thought was quite good.

Then Phil told us how that evening Caffeine Carl and Nick Norman were playing at Hank’s. I was so disappointed because I would have loved to have seen them together again. It had been years since I have seen them perform. Unfortunately with the dinner reservations, that kind of nixed that idea. Don’t get me wrong, I love going out to dinner and what not, but sometimes I like it better in a way when we don’t have any plans. Let the day just play itself out and do whatever comes your way.

It was getting later in the evening and we had to get back to the Gardens. We said our goodbyes and made a quick stop at a wine shop located on Simonton near the Gardens since Lola’s is a BYO. Let’s just say it was an interesting conversation with the owner of the shop. He was a nice gentleman, but had some strong feelings political wise. To me, the last thing I want to discuss with anyone mind you, are politics. We did make it back just in time to freshen up before dinner. We met up with everyone and all had a “pre” dinner beverage. 

Thankfully Lola’s is located practically right behind the Gardens, because when we got there, they just started calling out people’s names on the reservation list. They called Julie’s name and we walked in.

We were seated right in front of the chef’s station. I thought how fun. We can watch him do his magic while we wait on our meals. Lynn and Al were seated towards the front along the wall. We waved at each other as we had our wine bottles opened by the server. 

I thought it was kind of interesting, usually the server will go to each table to tell you what the menu is for that particular evening. This time however, he stood in the middle of the small dining room and told everyone at once what the first courses were, along with the main courses. For some reason the scene from that movie The Menu came to mind. 

One of the items that struck me was the pompano filet served with a garlic and lemon sauce. I was definitely going to get that and so I did. I also ordered the braised artichoke hearts to start like I usually do. Brent and Julie ordered the red grouper, along with the seared scallops to start. My husband followed suite with the scallops, but again ordered meat, the filet mignon. 

It was really entertaining to see the chef cook all these meals for everyone. He would grab one skillet, then a pan, etc. I don’t know how he does it, but he does it extremely well. Yes it is a little bit of time between courses but that is to be expected. All the food that was served was delicious. I don’t think there wasn’t anything that was remotely unsatisfactory. The only negative I have is not knowing the prices. And oh my the prices. When we got the bill, let’s just say it was a lot.

Once we were done, I was feeling very full and wanted to go for a walk. However, I was ruled out and we just walked back to the Gardens. We all wound up at the Gardens Gazebo while our food settled and finish the wine we brought to Lola’s. It was a beautiful evening that I didn’t even think about walking around anymore.

After all that food, it didn’t take me long wanting to get some sleep. So I told everyone I was going back to the room and call it a night. 

Friday, April 19th – Moondog Café, Ricks, Tree Bar, Smokin Tuna (one last time), Kaya

It was another sunny morning, but it was definitely hotter then it had been all week. Brent and Julie were going to eat at the Gardens again, so we were off on our own. Where to eat today? We both thought. Then I suggested Moondog Café. It had been a while since we have eaten there, because every time we have tried, it was too crowded and there was a wait. We figured lets try and give it a shot, if not we’ll go somewhere else.

We walked down to Whitehead St. and saw some people standing around outside of Moondog. Oh no there’s a wait I thought. However, when we arrived at the entrance, the hostess said she had one seat available outside (but in the sun) or we could be seated inside. We both said in unison inside. When we walked in, we saw a couple of open seats at the bar. We asked her if we could sit there and she said it was fine. We both tend to prefer sitting at the bar if available vs. a table anyway. 

One thing I do like about Moondog, is how they serve Cuban Coffee Queen coffee. I wish more places do. We both ordered a cup of coffee. While we were looking over the menu we heard a “hey guys” behind us. At first we weren’t sure who it was, but then she told us it was Janice. We were both like Janice! We hadn’t seen her in a while. When we used to watch Zack Seemiller play at Willie T’s a few years back Janice would show up with her husband Matt and we would all hang out together. It was a lot of fun. Turns out that she now manages the Moondog. Good to know if we ever have an issue getting a table. 

We chatted for a couple minutes before she had to get back to work. When the bartender came back over, we both ordered the exact same thing. Oh no it is going to get messed up I thought. We both ordered two eggs over medium, side of sausage and wheat toast. Nope not this time. Both our orders arrived pretty quickly and it was perfect and hot. Now I remember why I liked this place. You even get a slice of refreshing watermelon accompanying your breakfast.

When we were done, we walked past the Hemingway House debating whether or not to check it out. It had been a while since we went in, but when we walked by, it was packed with people waiting outside of the entrance to get inside. Maybe another time. 

Then we made the daunting decision to go back to our room and pack up some of our things. Our laundry was dropped off the night before, so we knew at some point we should get ahead of it. Not wanting to, we walked back to the Gardens and packed up all the clothes that we weren’t going to be wearing for the rest of our trip and what we had in the bag of clean laundry. It wasn’t as bad as I thought and in a way felt relieved to get it done instead of waiting until later in the day or even Saturday morning.

We went back down by the pool and saw Lynn and Al. They were heading home a day before we were. It seemed like we all just got there and now we are talking about leaving. Brent and Julie also came back from their breakfast. They wound up going to the Hyatt for a bite. We all decided to hang out until it Lynn and Al had to leave for the airport. Soon it was time for them to leave and we all said our good byes. We’ll see each other soon we said and wished them well.

I was getting a little antsy since it was our last full day in Key West and didn’t want to spend the entire day at the Gardens. So with a little convincing my husband and I walked back down Duval. We really didn’t have any agenda, but thought about seeing Teri at the Tree Bar. We walked by and there weren’t any seats open so we kept walking and saw that the perch seats at Rick’s were open. (We used to frequent Rick’s a lot when Miguel used to bartender there. Poor Miguel – we miss that guy.)  

We sat down and ordered a couple of beers. It felt odd to be back since it had been a long time. There was duo playing in the back and they sounded pretty good. I didn’t recognize who they were though. I kept checking what time it was because it was nearing the time for me to check us in to our flight the next day, which was at 2pm. A few more minutes passed and I went ahead and successfully went through the check in process with the United App. I remember how years ago you would have to do it on a computer. 

No dinner plans were on the horizon, so we thought about where to eat for our last night. Then we joked about how we never made it to Old Town Mexican. As I have mentioned before, it isn’t the best mexican food, but it is good enough, if you are craving mexican. I texted Julie to see what she thought about it and both her and Brent were in. Dinner plans were made. 

Once our beers were done, I peeked over to see if the Tree Bar had any open seats and they did. We made the quick hop over and sat down. We said hello to Teri and chatted with her for a bit. She told us about how the old Lazy Gecko location, which became unfortunately a Sandal Factory, was going to be the Tiki House Bar. They were moving from their old spot on Greene St. I hope it does well. 

We thanked Teri and began walking again. Then the thought of “one last time to the Smokin Tuna” hit me. So we walked down Charles St. to the Tuna. Phil was back behind the bar but it was nearing the end of his shift. Fried Newt was finishing up his set and Cliff Cody was next. 

After Phil served us a few beers he joined us at the bar. More people started to come in to the Tuna while we were talking to him. Then the next shift of bartenders came in, including Big Ed. It was good to see him again.

Before we new it, Cliff Cody came on stage. Time was flying by and we were having such a good time. In a way I wish we didn’t make plans because I could have stayed longer. Maybe it was better to take a break and get back to the Gardens. We said our goodbyes and made the not to long of walk to the Gardens. Duval was definitely more crowded then it had been all week. Then again it was a Friday when usually everyone comes in for a long weekend.

We quickly freshened up for dinner and met back up with Brent and Julie. When we walked down to Old Town Mexican, which isn’t far at all from the Gardens, there were no seats available at the bar. Plan B we all thought. And Plan B was…. yup Kaya Island Eats! Why not? We had such a wonderful meal there a few days ago and their prices aren’t through the roof. 

So we made the short stroll across Duval to Kaya. We walked in and there were a few people sitting at the bar, but there was enough room available to accommodate the four of us. Like last time I ordered the buffalo cauliflower and the rasta pasta with portobello mushrooms. My husband ordered the tuna poke nachos and for his main dish the pan fried mahi mahi bites with a thai chili sauce and toasted sesame seeds.

When my rasta pasta came out, it was loaded with portobello mushrooms. I knew it would be right since my husband didn’t order the same thing like last time. Everything again was delicious. It wound up being the perfect call for our last dinner in Key West.

After we were done, I wanted to go out and walk around but no one else did, so we walked back to the Gardens. All of us were leaving the next day, so it was probably for the best. We wound up going back to the Gazebo for one last night call before settling in for the last night.

Saturday, April 20th – Going Home

Ever since our debacle last July, I tend to get a bit on edge with our flight going back to Newark. We woke up to another beautiful morning. I checked my phone and our 2pm flight was still on schedule. I even looked at the weather back home and it was a cool but a nice day back in New Jersey. We should be good to go I thought to myself.

Since it was our last morning, we all agreed to have breakfast at the Gardens. I forgot how nice their breakfasts are. The server brought out first a glass of orange juice and a cup filled with yogurt and fresh fruit. Then the breakfast that morning was a hot slice of quiche served with potatoes. 

After breakfast we went back to our room to finish packing our things. We weren’t leaving until 12:30pm, so I asked the Gardens for a late check out. They said it wouldn’t be a problem, but we wound up leaving are room at 11am anyway. We brought our luggage by the pool and talked to Brent and Julie for a few. They were leaving a little before us since they had a rental car to fuel up and drop off. Then it was time for us to say our good byes but would most likely see them again in the airport since it is so small.

Next came our turn to leave. Usually we have the Gardens call a taxi for us, but this time I wanted to try Uber. I have the Uber app on my phone, but only have used it once in a long time. I am headed to Minnesota for work soon and will need to use the app to get from the airport to the hotel. So I clicked on the app and hit pick us up to go to the airport. Within 4 minutes the driver was there. I think now I am converted to use Uber to bring us back to the airport from now on.

Once we were dropped off, we went to the TSA line. Wow is all I could say. Everyone was leaving the same time. Thankfully we have TSA Pre so the line was not nearly as bad. Note to self, if you don’t have TSA Pre, give yourself extra time to get through security before your flight, especially if you are leaving on a weekend. 

We got through security easily and took the escalator down one level. I always hold my breath to see how many people are in the waiting area. And yes it was packed. We walked on over to the Delta Gate through masses of people and found Brent and Julie. We wanted to wish them safe travels and say goodbye again.

We had about an hour before we boarded so we walked over near the food area. Luckily one of the standing only tables were free, so we made refuge there. My husband ordered us a couple of cocktails. I figured why not, we’re still technically on vacation, even though it didn’t feel like it. I checked my phone again, and our flight was still on time. And it was. Soon we heard the announcement that they were going to start to preboard. We always laugh how every other airline, whether it is Delta, American, etc. all the passengers wait to go on line until their boarding class is called. Not United. As soon as they mention the start of preboard, everyone swarms by the Gate area even if they are boarding Group 5. Since I have the United Card we are always in Group 1. 

Somehow we were able to get near the gate and got on line when they called Group 1. We all walked out and were guided around all of the construction. At one point they had us all stop under a covering for a bit. I thought something’s wrong, but I think there was another plane that just arrived and the people were leaving the same way we were supposed to go to our plane. While we were waiting we saw Brent and Julie walking to board their plane. It was pretty funny shouting their names and waving goodbye.

Then we got the go ahead to continue our journey to the plane. I say journey, because the United plane is always the furthest plane away from the airport. I don’t know why, but it has never changed. Eventually when the airport expansion is finally complete, that won’t matter, but until then, it is a long walk.

Soon we were back on our way to Newark, NJ. The flight was mostly uneventful until we neared the airport. While we were descending, there was a lot of turbulence. Not what you want to feel as the plane lowers in the air. Luckily it dissipated by the time we landed.

Once we got off the plane, we got in contact with our car driver and soon we were on our way. I noticed that so much had bloomed on the trees since only a week ago. I was already missing Key West, but at least it is the start to the warmer months in New Jersey. About little under an hour we were back home.

Again we had a wonderful time in Key West. We did a little bit of everything. I don’t think any trip is exactly the same as the last which makes each and every one so special, like the great people we meet and the special friends we see. And that’s why Key West is my happy place.
